Are you thinking about having your wedding at home? If you are lucky enough to have a home or garden big enough to cater for this special event, then why not? I speak from experience. When my husband and I got married, we had our service in the local church and held our wedding reception at home. Now, if I could turn back time and the options had been available to us, I might well have chosen to have our ceremony at home too, although some of our ‘old school’ relatives would have been outraged by the idea!

Let’s face it: there’s something magical about having a wedding at home. Most of us have a powerful connection to our homes. There is nowhere more peaceful and reassuring to be.

Whether you hold it in the garden where you played as a child or the family farm, like my couple, Louisa and Dan, with amazing barns and the rolling landscape, more couples are choosing to get married in spaces that really mean something special to them. Even celebs like Stacey Solomon and Josh Swash are joining in this rising trend; they held their wedding at their delightful home, Pickle Cottage.

So, what is the appeal? I find that a wedding at home offers real intimacy, flexibility, and, of course, a personal touch that no traditional venue can even come close to. And, naturally, with the help of a wedding celebrant, you can have a heartfelt, unique wedding ceremony that reflects your beautiful love story, even if your home isn’t a licensed venue.

That’s right, your home does not need to be licensed for a celebrant-led wedding ceremony.

So, if you’re dreaming of a relaxed, joyful wedding day, a personal celebration of your relationship, then here’s how you plan a wedding at home, so it runs smoothly and fulfils your vision. I’ve included what you’ll need to organise, and some insights I have picked up from the many garden weddings I have been lucky enough to officiate.

Why Choose A Wedding At Home?

As Dorothy, from The Wizard of Oz stated, ‘There’s no place like home.’

The Americans and Australians have been doing it for years. Now, finally, more and more UK couples are embracing the idea of having a wedding at home. Why? Because: 

• It’s deeply personal: Your surroundings already tell part of your love story, and you’ll feel like your surroundings are wrapping their virtual arms around you both.
• You have full creative control: There are no “venue rules”; it’s just your vision for a very special event.
• It can be more cost-effective: Sometimes! You can make your wedding at home more economical than a hired venue by utilising the help and talents of your family and friends. From homemade decorations to a wedding cake created by a clever relative, there are many ways you can prevent wedding costs from spiralling. I love the sense of community a wedding at home creates; it certainly makes a wedding day feel even more special.
• It feels more relaxed: You’re at home, where love resides, memories are created, friends and family belong, and laughter never ends.

Just take a look at Grace and Elijah’s wedding. It was held at Elijah’s mother’s home. I officiated their wedding in the courtyard, surrounded by farm buildings with a fountain in the middle. With the sun shining brightly, it felt very Italianate. The reception took place under a large stretch tent in the garden. Despite the massive amount of hard work leading up to their special day, everyone was very calm and relaxed. That’s why a wedding at home is so perfect.

So, from romantic garden ceremonies to festival-style celebrations on family land, I’ve been lucky to attend them all. Having a wedding at home offers endless possibilities. You are only restricted by your imagination!

How Does the Legal Side Work?

Let me explain briefly the legalities of having a wedding at home.

In the UK, you can’t legally marry at home unless your property is a licensed venue. But don’t worry, that doesn’t mean you can’t have your dream ceremony at home.

Many couples register their marriage at the Registry Office (a simple legal appointment with two witnesses), in the same way someone registers a birth or death. Then they hold their main wedding ceremony (where you say your vows and exchange your rings) and have a celebration at home, led by a wedding celebrant, like me.

For some couples, getting their family on board with the idea that this is the perfect option for them can be difficult. I remember Charlotte and Oscar’s wedding. Charlotte’s dad, being very ‘old school’, took a bit of persuading! Originally, he wanted them to have a traditional church wedding; however, on the day of the wedding, he absolutely loved it! He adored just how personal the wedding ceremony was, and how much it reflected their relationship together. And, it was what they really wanted.

What You Need to Organise for A Wedding At Home

Planning a wedding at home is exciting, but because you’re essentially creating your own venue, it can be a lot of hard work too. Here are some practical elements you need to consider:

Shelter

• Marquee, tipi, or stretch tent hire is vital, especially for our unpredictable UK weather. Remember Charlotte and Oscar? Unfortunately, the weather was not kind on their special day. The ceremony took place in a marquee, rather than the garden, however, the marquee looked beautiful! Adorned with flowers, it felt very intimate. The good news is that there are some fantastic companies across the UK with a magnificent range of marquees in all different shapes and sizes. • Choose one that suits your guest list and style. I love the traditional pitch pole marquee – giving the true country wedding/fete vibes, or at the other end of the scale, the magnificent wooden structures taking their inspiration from Victorian glasshouses. Of course, tipis give a rustic, boho vibe that’s perfect for an informal, forest-style wedding. 
• Don’t forget you need flooring, sides, and heaters (again, we are back to the great British weather!).

Furniture

• You’ll need to hire tables, chairs, and possibly lounge seating if you wish to set up a relaxed area. Alternatively, just like Louisa and Dan’s wedding, you can utilise bales of hay! (see image above)
• Remember to plan for both the ceremony seating, dining space, and catering. You may also wish to include extras like a cake table or a bar setup.
• Don’t be afraid to chat to your friends and family. Collectively, you may be able to cater for the day with an eclectic mixture of seating from them all, after all, a wedding at home is very much about your community coming together.

Power & Lighting

• It might be worth considering hiring a generator for the additional lighting, catering equipment, music, and more.
• Use a mixture of lighting, but don’t forget fairy lights; they create a stunning, magical atmosphere.

Toilets

• It’s an essential, I’m afraid, but try to hire luxury portable toilets (much nicer for comfort and cleanliness!).

Catering

• Here you are spoilt for choice. Decide between traditional caterers, food trucks, BBQs, or a homemade buffet. It all depends on your budget and theme. Naturally, if you opt for a homemade buffet, you can call upon the skills of ‘Aunty Flo’, ‘cousin Jen’, your best friends, and your neighbours to create a scrumptious offering, fit for any royal garden party!
• If caterers are coming to your home, remember they’ll need space for prep and service (undercover, of course).

Drinks

• Provide your own alcohol (no corkage fees!). Why not hire a mobile bar? There are some fantastic ones available for special events. Alternatively, you may wish to create your very own DIY drinks station!
• You can hire glasses and don’t forget ice.

The Ceremony

One of the most exciting and fantastic benefits of a wedding at home is how personal your ceremony can be, especially when led by a professional, independent wedding celebrant. Wait until you talk to me on the phone, you will feel my excitement the moment we speak. I love just how special celebrant-led weddings are. Well, you just have to look at the photos on my website to see the joy at every one!

You see, with a celebrant, you’re not confined to a scripted, one-size-fits-all legal ceremony. You won’t stand in front of a stranger as you exchange your vows. Instead, you’ll work with your celebrant, who gets to know you as a couple and helps you shape a ceremony that reflects your journey, values, and personality.

This could include:

• Your love story: From how you met to the moment you said ‘yes’!
• Personal vows: Write your own promises in your own words — romantic, heartfelt, funny, or all three. (Your celebrant can help you with this if you have writer’s block or you are unsure where to start.)
• Family & friends’ involvement: You can invite loved ones to do readings, poems, or blessings.
• Symbolic rituals: These may include handfasting, candle lighting, or tree planting.
• Cultural and spiritual elements: Combine cultural traditions that matter to you, add or adapt any religious elements you would like, or create new ones!

Remember, you can hold the ceremony anywhere on your property: under a favourite tree, beside a pond, in the vegetable garden, on the lawn with an arch, or even indoors by candlelight with floral decorations. There’s no pressure, no rules, just the freedom to create a moment that truly feels special to you.

And because it’s non-legally binding, there’s no rush or bureaucracy (unlike a registrar, a celebrant doesn’t have to dash off to the next ceremony!). You can take your time; you can really savour the moment and make this the emotional centrepiece of your wedding celebration.

Tip: Work closely with your chosen celebrant so that together you can co-create a ceremony that brings joy and meaning to everyone there. It’s not a legal formality, like one led by a registrar, but a lasting memory of your special day.

Practical Bits – Very Important Though!

• Parking: Where will your guests park? Will you need signage or maybe a shuttle bus to ferry guests to your home?
• Neighbour notification: Let them know in advance and be considerate of noise, of course, if they are friends of the family and attending the wedding, you might get them involved, helping with catering, parking, or essentials like seating!
• Insurance: Public liability and wedding insurance are highly recommended.
• Waste disposal: Arrange for bins and rubbish removal for after the event.
• Wet weather backup: Even with a marquee, walkways can get slippery and consider umbrellas to help your guests stay dry (I know, I’m obsessed with the weather!)
• Hot weather plan: shade is key especially for a ceremony when your guests are seated and unable to move to shade

Personal Touches That Make A Wedding At Home Special

What makes a wedding at home so memorable is the freedom to fill it with personal details. I love the feeling of community with a wedding at home. There is a sense that everyone has pulled together to make the day happen (often the case!).

Here are some simple ideas I have experienced, during my 8 years as a wedding celebrant in Devon, that can add a personal touch to proceedings:

• DIY decorations like handmade bunting, signage, or floral centrepieces
• A memory table with family photos and keepsakes
• Your dog as part of the ceremony, so adorable!
• Garden games and a chill-out zone for guests
• Fire pits and marshmallows for a cosy evening touch, throw in some blankets, and your guests will be very happy
• Umbrellas – for that unhelpful and unexpected shower
• Bottles of water for the heatwave

I’m sure you have a head full of fun, innovative ideas you can add into the mix, but isn’t it exciting to think you have the freedom to do all of this?

As I hope you can tell, I’m a massive cheerleader for garden weddings. A wedding at home is filled with charm, warmth, and authenticity. You’re not just renting a space for a few hours; you’re building your celebration in a place that already holds love for you. You are adding to the history of your home with your special day.

Introduction

Devon, home to two National Parks, 5 Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and countless charming villages and towns, is the perfect wedding location. There is a plethora of wedding ceremony venues in Devon to choose from, and a few hidden secret locations too! As a wedding celebrant, I’ve had the pleasure of officiating ceremonies in some of the most picturesque settings, so I thought I’d share my insights with you.

Deer Park

Just outside the market town of Honiton, in East Devon, is the Grade II listed building Deer Park Country House. Set in 80 acres of stunning grounds, Deer Park is a Georgian mansion offering sumptuous style and sophistication. I have been lucky enough to officiate at countless weddings here, and every single one has been unique in its own right.

Deer Park offers a variety of breathtakingly beautiful locations for couples to choose from for their ceremony. From the romantic orangery to the picturesque Italian Gardens, I have presided as a wedding celebrant for indoor and outdoor weddings. As the venue offers exclusive use to their couples, I find that both the wedding party and their guests relax from the moment they arrive. Paired with luxury accommodation, award-winning food, and exceptional service, it is little wonder why Deer Park is so popular.

When looking for wedding ceremony venues in Devon, this one always delivers intimate warmth, a pretty setting, and a magical atmosphere.

Huntsham Court

What better place to get married than a country house literally built for a bride? Indeed, Huntsham Court, once a derelict Tudor manor, was rebuilt by 1868 following the marriage of the owner Charles Arthur William Troyte to Catherine Mary Walrond in 1864. The reason? Her family did not deem the old Tudor manor suitable accommodation.

Today, this stunning manor house offers couples exclusive use of the venue and its magnificent setting. As wedding ceremony venues in Devon go, this one provides great flexibility. The estate is lucky enough to have a church at the end of its driveway, so they can offer couples religious ceremonies, licenced registrar wedding ceremonies, and independent celebrant wedding ceremonies.

Huntsham Court’s website outlines the benefits of each, but naturally, as an independent wedding celebrant, I love their description for independent ceremonies: ‘You can throw any rule book away, as it is entirely hand-crafted. This way, it reflects your personal beliefs and values.’

Huntsham Court caters for up to 130 guests, with accommodation for up to 100. However, it is their very special 2 day country house package that sets them apart. I’ve been lucky enough to experience the relaxed, friendly atmosphere this offer provides; it adds an extra special ambience to the personalised weddings I officiate.

Rockbeare Manor

Like many wedding ceremony venues in Devon, including Deer Park and Huntsham Court, Rockbeare Manor offers exclusive use of their gorgeous country house and grounds. Many couples worry about location when choosing wedding ceremony venues in Devon, however, this grand estate can be found just outside Exeter.

If the British weather is kind, then consider having your wedding ceremony in the established gardens overlooking the Manor house and Dartmoor. For indoor ceremonies, Rockbeare Manor has two stunning options: the Dining Room and the Ballroom. I promise you, the wedding ceremony photographs will be picturesque, whichever option you select. In the many wedding ceremonies I have presided over, Rockbeare Manor and its professional staff, with a great eye for detail, have always delivered.

Pynes House

Again, offering exclusive use, Pynes House is an elegant, romantic setting for weddings. If you are looking for wedding ceremony venues in Devon steeped in history, then this prestigious Georgian mansion is a must. You will be walking in the footsteps of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert nonetheless. Additionally, I can testify that you will be treated like royalty on your special day.

I have been a wedding celebrant in both the glorious gardens (yes, the sun does shine in Britain when we are lucky) and the impressive state rooms. There is a delightful choice for couples to consider, all equally spectacular.

The Great Barn

A step away from grand houses now and one of my favourite wedding ceremony venues in Devon, for its exclusive 2 day hire rule, is The Great Barn. To ensure everything is perfect for your special day, The Great Barn gives you exclusive access to the venue the day before your ceremony as part of your booking. This gives you time to decorate the space to your tastes and rehearse music and lighting for your special day.

I also love The Great Barn’s ability to cope with the unpredictability of the British weather. They have a beautiful arbour in the walled gardens outside for warm, sunny spring/summer weddings and, naturally, the magnificent Great Barn for indoor weddings. This impressive structure, with its oak vaulted ceiling, always creates a very special atmosphere. If the weather isn’t playing ball, the venue also offers a smaller barn, The West Barn, for reception drinks.

Finally, if you do want a religious wedding ceremony, they have the most picturesque church within walking distance.

Hayne Devon

Set in the rolling hills of Devon, with woodlands and orchards, is Hayne. I often get a magical, woodland fairy vibe at this remarkable location. Like The Great Barn, your booking gives you exclusive access for 2 days. There are two enchanting outdoor locations where wedding ceremonies can be held, and if the weather isn’t kind, couples can always rely on the Threshing Barn. If you are looking for wedding ceremony venues in Devon that offer a more relaxed, quintessential, but pretty vibe, then I would seriously consider this one.

Brickhouse Vineyard

You might be looking for wedding ceremony venues in Devon that are a bit different. Do you fancy having a Mediterranean vibe to your wedding day? Brickhouse Vineyard certainly delivers that. I love the versatility that this delightful venue offers couples, too. From ‘elopement’ style weddings for up to 10 guests to a full weekend wedding for 70 daytime guests, Brickhouse Vineyard can cater to your needs.

I truly love the thatched round house at this venue and the fact that even if the weather doesn’t play ball, you can still feel like you are linked to the outdoors with their floor-to-ceiling windows. Of course, as a wedding celebrant, I love outdoor weddings, and here, my couples have exchanged their personal vows overlooking vineyards and the glorious Devon countryside – perfect.

Powderham Castle

If you truly wish to feel like royalty, for just one day, then why not consider, probably one of the grandest wedding ceremony venues in Devon, Powderham Castle? Originally built in 1391, Powderham Castle has evolved considerably over the last 6 centuries into the magnificent structure we see today.

Powderham Castle has 4 licensed venues, from the State Rooms to beautiful outdoor settings for official marriage ceremonies to take place. Of course, don’t forget, if you choose to have an independent wedding celebrant officiate over your wedding ceremony, this does not have to take place at a licensed venue. Not sure what I mean? Finally, before I forget, if you are looking for wedding ceremony venues in Devon that allow your ‘best friend’ to attend, Powderham Castle is dog-friendly, so your pooch can be part of the celebrations too!

Mount Folly Farm

Mount Folly Farm at Bigbury is one of those wedding ceremony venues in Devon that offers the very best views! I have been lucky enough to enjoy those views on many occasions! However, Hatch, and Stretch Tents South West are companies who often provides marquees at this stunning location, can offer their services to a whole host of venues, including some I have already discussed in this blog and Little Dartmouth located on the coastal hills of the county, where the marquee provides views to Torcross and Star Point Lighthouse.

That’s where my hint at hidden locations comes in, which I alluded to at the beginning of this blog. When searching for wedding ceremony venues in Devon, remember you are only limited by your imagination! Devon is filled with magical spaces that just ache to be used as a backdrop for your special day (landowner’s permission is needed, of course).

Other Venues

As you have discovered, there are so many wedding ceremony venues in Devon to explore; we are spoilt for choice! I would like to give a brief mention, therefore, to just a few more all are exceptional and offering something different : Beaconside House Clifford Barton, The Hall Exeter, East Soar Farm, Hareston Manor, and Higher Eggbeer. These are wedding venues that I have only attended once or twice or I have yet to visit (although I do have bookings in a few of these this year, which is very exciting).

I can’t wait to officiate at more weddings in these equally special locations. You never know, maybe, if you are reading this and planning your own special day, I might be lucky enough to be your wedding celebrant at one of them.

Every year, on March 8th, we celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD). It’s a day to reflect on how far we’ve come, to honour the women who paved the way, and to champion those who continue to break barriers. For me, as an Independent Wedding Celebrant and proud business owner of Fanfare Ceremonies, this day holds a special significance. It is about celebrating amazing women who have helped me, on my own personal journey, with my business in an industry I adore. However, it must also be about celebrating amazing women from our past, who made this all possible for us. Therefore, let me first acknowledge the pioneers who forged a path for us all.

International Women’s Day History:

IWD began in 1911 when brave, determined women fought for their rights, demanding better pay, fair working conditions, and the right to vote. At that time, women had little political representation, limited opportunities in the workplace, and were often expected to conform to societal expectations that restricted their independence.

The early suffragists and activists who started IWD knew that change was necessary. Their courage and resilience set in motion a global movement that was finally recognised by the UN in 1975. It recognised the importance of celebrating amazing women and has provided a platform that allows women today to build successful businesses, take leadership roles, and pursue their dreams freely. Thanks to their strength, we now live in a world where women can thrive as entrepreneurs, support one another, and continue to break down barriers that once seemed insurmountable.

From Sara Blakely, who built Spanx from the ground up, to Whitney Wolfe Herd, the youngest female CEO to take a company public with Bumble, women are proving that they belong at the top. Their success paves the way for more women to enter leadership roles and create businesses that challenge the status quo.

Being a female entrepreneur isn’t always easy. There are challenges, doubts, and days when everything feels impossible. But we keep going. We persevere. And we succeed.

Celebrating Amazing Women in Love

One of the greatest privileges of my role, as a wedding Celebrant, is meeting strong, independent women who are following their dreams. These women or brides are choosing to celebrate their love on their own terms – wanting their wedding ceremonies  to reflect their personalities, values, and relationships. Indeed not only their relationship and love for their partner but also celebrating amazing women in their lives be that their best friends, mothers or grandmothers.

No longer bound by the constraints of traditional legal ceremonies, they are embracing romantic, unique, and deeply personal celebrations. Whether it’s writing their own vows, incorporating meaningful rituals, or simply choosing a location that speaks to their hearts, these women are stamping their individuality onto their wedding ceremonies. And it is truly joyous to witness and share in these special moments.

The Future is Bright: Celebrating Amazing Women!

As I reflect on my journey and the incredible women who have supported me, I feel nothing but gratitude. The women of 1911 fought for us to have choices, and we honour them every time we take a step forward in business, in life, and in lifting up those around us.

So today, on International Women’s Day, I’m celebrating amazing women past and present. I want to say to them all, thank you. Thank you to the trailblazers who paved the way. Thank you to the incredible women I work alongside. And thank you to every woman out there chasing her dreams.

Here’s to us – the women in business, the dreamers, the doers. We’ve come so far, and the best is yet to come!
