Wedding ceremony scripts can start to sound all the same especially if you’ve attended a lot of weddings. Particularly in the case of registrar-led ceremonies. Religious wedding ceremony scripts, while they follow established structures, often bring more natural variation through tradition, denomination, and the person leading them. But civil ceremonies bound by council frameworks, can feel strikingly similar.

The same phrases. The same structure. The same “insert couple here” moments dressed up as something meaningful. It’s not that these wedding ceremony scripts are bad . But they can feel functional, interchangeable and characterless. Like they’ve been lifted from a template with the gaps filled in.

And that’s because, in many cases, they have.

Recycled wedding ceremony scripts

Wedding ceremony scripts have become one of the most recycled pieces of writing in modern celebrations. Officiants rely on pre-approved wording or tried-and-tested templates. It makes sense from a logistics standpoint; efficiency, consistency, legality. But from a human standpoint? It can miss the mark.

It’s also worth acknowledging a growing trend: some councils now offer what they describe as “personalisation” within their ceremony options. On paper, this sounds like a step in the right direction. In reality, it’s a very different experience from working with a celebrant.

With registrar-led ceremonies, any personalised content typically needs to be written or sourced by the couple, submitted in advance, and approved by the council. The registrar then delivers that content within a fixed structure.

By contrast, a celebrant doesn’t just deliver your story. They help uncover it, shape it, and craft it into something cohesive and meaningful. The difference isn’t just in what’s said, but in how it’s created. Because your relationship isn’t templated.

It wasn’t built from bullet points or standard phrasing. It grew through specific moments, inside jokes, challenges, quirks, and stories that are entirely yours.

However sadly when it comes to the ceremony the very heart of the wedding many couples’ wedding ceremony scripts that could belong to anyone.

That’s where the difference lies.

Wedding ceremony scripts that celebrate you

Wedding Ceremony scripts crafted by a celebrant is not about filling in blanks. It’s about starting with a blank page and, more importantly, building a genuine relationship.

Rather than starting with pre-written options or set wording, a celebrant begins with you. Your story, your dynamic, and what truly matters to you as a couple.

But that question isn’t answered in a single meeting or a quick questionnaire. It comes from time spent getting to know you properly through conversations, shared stories, and the small details that don’t make it onto standard forms but say everything about who you are as a couple.

This is where the real difference lies.

A celebrant doesn’t just gather information—they build a connection. They begin to understand your dynamic, your humour, your rhythm as a couple. They notice how you speak about each other, what you emphasise, what you laugh about, what matters most.

That relationship is what allows them to write in a way that doesn’t just describe you; it sounds like you.

So when your ceremony is delivered, it doesn’t feel like something written about you from the outside. It feels familiar. Recognisable. As though someone has found the words that could have been written a family member or old friend.

A celebrant-led ceremony is built from that connection. It draws on your story. How you met, what you value, what makes your relationship tick, and what you want your future to feel like. It’s about capturing your voice, your energy, and the way you naturally are together.

And that’s why no two celebrant wedding ceremony scripts are ever the same. Because no two couples and no two relationships are the same.

Personalisation is not a checkbox

Many couples aren’t aware that their ceremony can be completely personalised from start to finish. What’s often presented to them, particularly in registrar-led ceremonies, are small add-ons or limited choices that feel like personalisation, but in reality are a narrow and often unsatisfying version of what’s truly possible. Registrars simply do not have the time or scope within their role to create a ceremony that comes close to the depth and individuality a celebrant can offer.

A reading here. A symbolic ritual there. Maybe a quick anecdote. Job done.

But real personalisation doesn’t work like that. It’s not a garnish. It’s the whole meal.

True personalisation in wedding ceremony scripts is an art form. It requires listening deeply, noticing patterns, and translating lived experiences into words that feel natural and resonant. It’s about rhythm, tone, and emotional timing. It’s about knowing when to bring humour in, when to pause, and when to let a moment breathe.

A well-crafted ceremony doesn’t just tell your story. It feels like your story.

Guests lean in. They laugh at the right moments. They tear up unexpectedly. And most importantly, they walk away saying, “That was so them.” Not, “That was a lovely ceremony,” but “That was exactly who they are.” That distinction matters.

Wedding ceremony scripts that move beyond “Insert Couple Here”

If you’ve attended a number of civil ceremonies, certain lines will start to feel very familiar. Phrases like, “Marriage is a lifelong journey,” or “Today marks the beginning of your new life together,” or “You have chosen to stand before your family and friends to declare your love.”

These lines are well-meaning and appropriate but they are designed to fit every couple. They are part of structured registrar scripts that need to work universally, which means they rarely go beyond the surface. The result is a ceremony that sounds polished, but not necessarily personal.

A celebrant-crafted ceremony takes a completely different approach.

Rather than relying on standardised wording, it replaces general sentiment with lived experience. It moves away from what could apply to anyone, and leans into what could only ever apply to you.

So instead of hearing something broadly true about marriage, your guests hear something specifically true about your relationship details that make them smile in recognition, moments they remember, and insights that feel genuine.

That specificity is what transforms words from pleasant to powerful.

The role of storytelling in wedding ceremony scripts

At its core, great wedding ceremony scripts are built on storytelling.

Not a timeline of events, but a narrative with texture and meaning. It highlights not just what happened, but why it mattered. It connects the dots between past, present, and future in a way that feels cohesive and emotionally true. And storytelling is not something you can shortcut. It requires intuition. Craft. Experience. The ability to shape raw material into something that flows, engages, and resonates.

That’s why ceremonies written by skilled celebrants often feel effortless because a lot of thought has gone into making them feel that way.

Why AI isn’t the answer to great wedding ceremony scripts

In a world where AI can generate speeches, vows, and even wedding ceremony scripts in seconds, it’s tempting to think: why not use it for your ceremony? After all, it’s fast. It’s convenient. It can sound polished. But here’s the thing: AI works by recognising patterns and predicting language based on what already exists. And what already exists, in the world of wedding ceremony scripts, is a vast ocean of recycled scripts.

So what you get even when it sounds good is often a remix of familiar phrasing. A slightly more sophisticated template. Words that are technically correct, but emotionally generic.

AI doesn’t know what it felt like the first time you met. It doesn’t understand the subtle dynamics of your relationship. It can’t read the room, sense the energy of your guests, or adjust tone in real time. It doesn’t pick up on the throwaway comments in conversation that turn out to be the most meaningful details. Most importantly, it doesn’t care. And that lack of human connection shows, even if it’s hard to articulate.

A ceremony is not just a piece of writing it’s a shared experience. A moment that lives in the memory of everyone present. It deserves more than an algorithm assembling words based on probability.

The value of human craft

Working with a celebrant is a collaborative process.

It involves conversations that go beyond surface-level questions. It invites reflection. Sometimes even discovery couples often find themselves seeing their own relationship in a new light as they talk it through.

From there, the celebrant shapes those insights into wedding ceremony scripts that feel authentic, engaging, and uniquely yours.

They consider pacing. Voice. Emotional arc. They think about how your guests will experience the ceremony from beginning to end. They rehearse, refine, and deliver with intention.

It’s not just writing it’s performance, storytelling, and emotional intelligence combined. That level of craft is hard to replicate, and impossible to automate.

Creating a moment that stands apart

When your ceremony is truly personalised, something shifts. It no longer feels like a formal prelude to the “real” celebration. It the meaning behind the celebration that follows.

Guests pay attention. They connect. They feel included in your story rather than simply witnessing a ritual. The ceremony becomes a highlight, not a hurdle. And for you, as a couple, it becomes a moment where you feel seen.

So, what do you want to remember?

Years from now, when you think back on your wedding day, the details may blur the flowers, the table settings, even parts of the reception.

But the feeling of the ceremony? That tends to stick.

The way it sounded. The way it felt to stand there and hear your story told out loud. The reactions from your guests. The sense that, for that moment, everything was exactly as it should be.

That’s the power of wedding ceremony scripts that put you in the spotlight.

Not in a performative way, but in a deeply personal one.

But if you’re looking for something more something that reflects who you are, rather than what’s been done before it’s worth considering a different approach.

Because personalisation in wedding ceremony scripts isn’t about ticking boxes. It’s about creating something that couldn’t belong to anyone else. And when you get that right, your ceremony doesn’t just mark the start of your marriage. It becomes one of the most meaningful parts of it.

Ready to create something that sounds like you?

There’s nothing inherently wrong with traditional or templated wedding ceremony scripts. For some couples, it’s exactly what they want. But if you’re reading this and recognising that you want more than a standard script more than something that simply “does the job”then it’s worth asking a different question.

Not “What are our options?” but “What do we actually want this moment to feel like? Because your ceremony is the one part of your wedding where everything stops, and everyone listens. It’s your story, told out loud. And you deserve for it to sound like you. If that matters to you, then working with a celebrant isn’t an extra – it’s the difference. The difference between wedding ceremony scripts that are heard and felt. The difference between something familiar… and something unforgettable. And I’d love to be the celebrant to make that happen. click here straight through to my contact page

London is a city is after all where history and modernity sit side by side, where centuries-old gardens bloom behind grand façades, and where elegance feels both effortless and deeply rooted in tradition. As a London weddingcelebrant specialising in unique, quintessentially English ceremonies, I have the privilege of crafting celebrations that honour both heritage and individuality.

For couples and luxury wedding planners seeking a celebrant who understands tradition, setting, and tone, experience matters more than postcode. I bring careful attention to detail, a deep respect for each couple’s story, and my enthusiasm for delivering elegant, bespoke ceremonies at London’s most distinguished venues is unwavering.

London as home

Many of my clients are London-based couples but choose to marry elsewhere. In the countryside, by the coast, or at a treasured family home. Yet just as often, London is home. It is where their story unfolded, where they built their life together, and where their community gathers.

London has long been part of my own story too. I worked in the city for over a decade before I was married, and today it remains closely woven into my life as the home of my three grown-up children. As a result, I am frequently in the capital and remain deeply connected to its pace, its character, and its quiet sense of occasion.

For couples who choose to marry in the city, working with a London wedding celebrant allows them to honour the place that shaped them while embracing the timeless elegance of an English wedding tradition.

London offers something uniquely powerful: the opportunity to host a refined, garden-inspired ceremony within the capital itself, or to embrace the grandeur of its iconic architecture while retaining the intimacy of a deeply personal celebration.

The enduring allure of an english garden wedding

When one thinks of a quintessentially English wedding, it is often a garden that comes to mind. Soft lawns edged with roses. A quiet sense of romance that feels both effortless and enduring.

As a London wedding celebrant, I have had the privilege of conducting ceremonies at some of the capital’s most exquisite garden venues. I am delighted to be working for the first time at Chelsea Physic Garden in May where intimacy and botanical beauty create a sense of secluded refinement. Kew Gardens, with its iconic glasshouses and sweeping landscapes, offers a breathtaking backdrop where heritage and nature intertwine. The Hurlingham Club pairs manicured lawns with private club sophistication, while Grove House evokes the grace of an English country home within the city.

These venues along with many others allow couples to recreate the spirit of a traditional English garden wedding without leaving London. As an experienced London wedding celebrant, I ensure that the ceremony feels entirely in harmony with these surroundings elegant, unhurried and beautifully composed.

Urban sophistication with english tradition

While London’s gardens capture romance, its grand urban venues offer a different expression of English elegance.

I have also had the privilege of working at The Ned, a striking and sophisticated setting in the heart of the City. Its architectural grandeur and unmistakable London energy create a bold backdrop, yet the traditions of a classic English wedding remain perfectly at home there.

As a London wedding celebrant, my role is to ensure that regardless of whether we stand beneath chandeliers or beneath cedar trees, the essence of the ceremony remains timeless. The structure, the carefully considered language, the acknowledgement of family and heritage.

Urban venues such as The Ned demonstrate that a quintessentially English wedding is not defined by countryside alone. It is defined by tone, by intention, by the quiet confidence of tradition carried into contemporary spaces. As a London wedding celebrant I am proud to do just that and would love to do more.

Crafting bespoke wedding ceremonies across london’s finest venues

Being a London wedding celebrant means understanding the subtle nuances of each venue and curating a ceremony that sits effortlessly within its architecture, landscape and atmosphere. No two settings are alike, and no two couples are alike and that distinction deserves to be honoured with intention.

A celebrant-led ceremony offers a level of discernment and personal choice that is simply unmatched. You are not assigned an officiant; you select the individual who will stand before you, whose presence, voice and sensibility reflect the tone of your celebration. From that foundation, every element of the ceremony is composed with care. The careful composition of the words, the structure of the vows, the inclusion of readings or rituals, and the precise moment each is delivered.

The result is a ceremony that feels impeccably tailored to both setting and couple; refined in its structure, graceful in its delivery, and entirely bespoke.

My process begins with thoughtful conversation. I seek to understand your story, your aesthetic preferences, and the atmosphere you wish to create. Are you drawn to literary elegance? To subtle humour? To honouring family heritage in a visible way? Every detail informs the structure I design.

As a bespoke London wedding celebrant, I carefully craft ceremonies that balance personal narrative with timeless composed rhythm of a classic English ceremony. The result is neither theatrical nor formulaic — it is poised, heartfelt and entirely yours.

Although I may travel into London rather than live there full time, that distance only strengthens my intention to deliver ceremonies of the highest calibre. I approach every London wedding with preparation, precision and deep respect for the venue and planning team involved.

For luxury wedding planners seeking a London wedding celebrant who collaborates seamlessly, understands discretion, and values cohesion within a wider design vision, I bring both creative sensitivity and professional assurance.

London’s venues are extraordinary. They deserve ceremonies that rise to meet their beauty and stature.

Whether at Kew Gardens, Chelsea Physic Garden, The Hurlingham Club, Grove House, The Ned, or another of London’s distinguished locations, my commitment remains consistent: to deliver a ceremony that feels refined, meaningful and impeccably composed.

The wedding celebrant industry in the UK has grown rapidly in recent years. As more couples seek ceremonies that feel personal, meaningful, and reflective of who they truly are, celebrant-led weddings have become an increasingly attractive option. T

Despite this growth in popularity, there are now more trained celebrants than there is demand for them. While many newly trained celebrants bring enthusiasm, passion, and fresh ideas into the industry experienced wedding celebrants like myself with some 10 years in the industry and nearing 200 ceremonies under my belt, bring a level of skill, confidence, and emotional connection that can transform a ceremony and will make a real difference.

Understanding this matters. It helps couples make informed choices and ensures that their ceremony is not only personalised, but also calm, confident, and memorable for all the right reasons.

The value of experienced wedding celebrants

Currently in England and Wales wedding celebrants focus entirely on creating and delivering the ceremony which is the emotional heart of the wedding day. They are responsible for holding the story, guiding the moment, and setting the tone for everything that follows.

Training courses for celebrants are now two a penny and I concur they provide a useful foundation. They also provide a helpful additional income for those experienced wedding celebrants who have become mentors and trainers.

These courses introduce structure, language, and basic ceremony elements. However, training alone cannot replicate the skill and insight gained from leading real weddings. Standing in front of a live audience, navigating nerves, emotions, family dynamics, and unexpected moments requires experience that can only be built over time.

Experienced wedding celebrants have had the opportunity to develop this combination of experience, skill, and connection. This makes a noticeable difference in how natural, relaxed, and meaningful a ceremony feels. They know how to adjust in the moment whether that be the slowing the pace, offering reassurance, or gently guiding a couple through tricky moments.

A crowded and competitive landscape

The growth of training courses has created a vibrant but increasingly competitive landscape. There are many experienced wedding celebrants but there are also many many newly trained celebrants entering the industry full of excitement and optimism. Few however are fully aware of the challenges: finding clients, marketing themselves effectively, and establishing a sustainable presence can be difficult.

Choice is undoubtedly a positive thing. Couples today have more options than ever before when it comes to how they marry, and that flexibility deserves to be celebrated. In the UK, couples can choose a traditional religious ceremony, a legal civil ceremony, or a celebrant-led wedding.

However, the reality is that most couples still prioritise legalising their marriage at the same time as their wedding, rather than separating the legal process from the ceremony in favour of pure personalisation. In other words a celebrant led ceremony. This means the pool of couples actively seeking celebrant-led weddings is still smaller than the number of celebrants entering the market.

While training companies understandably focus on the positive aspects of celebrancy, they do not always highlight the challenges of entering such a competitive environment, the difficulty of standing out, or the time it can take to build both skill and a client base. From my perspective, the sheer number of newly trained celebrants I feel can be sometimes be detrimental to couples, who may choose someone with enthusiasm but limited experience, skill, or ability to connect. It can also impact an experienced wedding celebrant like myself, who find themselves continually undercut on price by those still developing their craft and who are understandably keen to get their foot in the door.

Experienced wedding celebrants stand out because they combine proven skills with real-world experience, ensuring couples receive guidance and support that comes from practice, insight, and emotional awareness.

Ceremony flow makes a difference

Every wedding is unique, and every couple’s story unfolds differently. Ceremony flow is one of the most underestimated aspects of a wedding and one of the most noticeable when it’s missing.

Experienced wedding celebrants understand how to pace a ceremony intuitively. They know when to pause, when to create space for reflection, and when to guide the moment forward so it feels effortless rather than staged. Without experience, ceremonies can feel rushed, overly long, or emotionally uneven. Experienced wedding celebrants understand how to shape the ceremony so it feels natural for the couple and engaging for their guests, allowing meaningful moments to land without feeling forced.

The Growing Popularity of Friends Leading Ceremonies

Another shift within the wedding landscape is the growing popularity of couples asking friends or family members to lead their ceremony. This choice is often made with the best intentions as couples want someone who knows them well and feels personally connected to their story.

However, this trend also represents another challenge for professional experienced wedding celebrants in an already highly competitive environment. Many couples understandably underestimate the responsibility involved in leading a ceremony, and it’s often only when a friend steps into the role that they realise there is far more to it than simply reading words aloud.

Holding space, managing emotion, pacing the ceremony, and maintaining calm presence all require skill and confidence that come with experience. While some friends rise to the occasion, others find the role overwhelming, highlighting the value of experienced wedding celebrants who are trained, emotionally equipped, and practiced at guiding such an important moment.

This shift doesn’t diminish the appeal of celebrant-led weddings, but it adds another layer to an already complex and competitive industry that remains in its infancy. One where experience, skill, and connection continue to make a meaningful difference.

Emotional awareness makes a difference

Weddings are wonderful happy occasions, but they are also layered with emotion. Nerves, excitement, family dynamics, and expectation all meet in one moment.

Seasoned experienced wedding celebrants bring emotional awareness to the ceremony. They can read the room, sense when reassurance is needed, and adapt seamlessly if emotions run high. They understand when to soften their tone or lift it, when to pause, and when to quietly support a couple through a particularly emotional moment.

Experienced wedding celebrants have encountered the full spectrum of emotions that can arise during a wedding ceremony. Their ability to respond thoughtfully and calmly develops over time, through experience and genuine connection with couples. This emotional intelligence ensures the ceremony feels supportive, heartfelt, and authentic.

Presence and energy anchors the ceremony

Presence is the quiet confidence that helps a ceremony feel grounded, calm, and held. It’s not about performance or being the centre of attention; it’s about creating the right energy and a sense of trust and reassurance.

Experienced wedding celebrants know how to hold space without dominating it. They create focus and calm even when unexpected moments arise, allowing the ceremony to continue smoothly and without stress.

Presence grows with time, experience, and self-awareness. Experienced wedding celebrants’ energy is often what separates a good ceremony from a truly memorable one.

Experience, Skill and Connection Bring refinement

True confidence in the role of a wedding celebrant doesn’t come from a certificate alone. It comes from years of leading real weddings, building relationships with couples, and navigating the unexpected with grace.

Experienced wedding celebrants bring a combination of skill, presence, and genuine connection that ensures a ceremony feels authentic, personal, and seamless from start to finish. Understanding the difference experience makes helps couples choose a celebrant who can deliver their dream ceremony.

Whether it’s guiding a nervous couple, reading the emotional energy of the room, or seamlessly adjusting to last-minute changes, experienced wedding celebrants excel because they have honed these abilities through practice, reflection, and dedication.

Choosing the right wedding celebrant for you

When choosing a wedding celebrant, you are inviting someone to hold the emotional centre of your day.

Choosing experienced wedding celebrants ensures your ceremony is calm, flowing, and heartfelt. Don’t under estimate the skill involved or the difference it can make. Experience brings confidence. Skill brings flow. Connection brings heart.

By choosing a celebrant who embodies all three, couples can trust that their wedding ceremony will be everything they imagined and more. It allows couples to relax, knowing that the most important moments of their day are being guided with expertise, sensitivity, and emotional awareness.

Tucked deep within the rolling countryside of Devon lies a venue that feels as though it has stepped out of a storybook. The Great Barn Devon is more than just a place for weddings or celebration. It is a setting that embodies the full charm of rural England while offering the style, sophistication, and experience today’s couples expect.

If you’re searching for your dream wedding venue, The Great Barn, Devon delivers a space and atmosphere that is at once historic and contemporary, intimate yet expansive, grand but never overwhelming. There is a reason it has become one of Devon’s most talked-about, ultimate countryside venues, and I was lucky enough to lead three ceremonies there in 2025.

THE GREAT BARN nestled in rural devon IS A CLASS ACT

Part of the magic of The Great Barn is its location. Surrounded by acres of lush, undisturbed farmland, the venue sits comfortably in the village of Higher Ashton within a pastoral landscape of rolling hills, hedgerows, and sun-washed stone buildings. The sense of escape begins well before you even arrive: To reach it you need to navigate winding country lanes and a steep descent but are still only 30 or so minutes from Exeter City Centre.

The Great Barn therefore maintains convenience, striking a rare balance between rural beauty and modern accessibility. It feels miles away from everything but is not difficult to get to. It’s beautifully placed striking the perfect balance of privacy and exclusivity yet remaining practical and easy for guests to reach.

Once there the character of the Great Barn becomes immediately apparent. Traditional stonework, beautifully restored architecture, and a tasteful combination of old-world charm and contemporary design create an atmosphere that is both warm and refined. Every corner feels intentional, yet nothing is contrived.

The great barn is a barn WEDDING VENUE like no other

While many barns serve as wedding venues today, few do it with the level of authenticity and grace found here. The Great Barn is, quite literally, great. It’s vast in scale, breathtaking in its height, and stunningly atmospheric.

Inside, exposed beams stretch across the ceiling like the ribs of a cathedral, giving the barn an almost spiritual sense of space. Natural light pours in softly during the day, while evenings transform the interior into something deeply romantic, with warm lighting and candlelit details that accentuate the texture of the centuries-old timbers.

Unlike many barn venues that emphasise rustic minimalism, The Great Barn blends old and new beautifully. It is elegant without being fussy, rustic without feeling rough, and incredibly versatile without losing its identity. However it is styled the barn adapts seamlessly. One of its greatest strengths, though, is that even without any decoration at all, it remains exquisite.

The People behind The Great Barn

What truly sets The Great Barn apart is the involvement of John and Emma Birkin, the couple who meticulously restored the site and remain embedded in its daily rhythm.

When you visit, you’re likely greeted by Emma, whose natural warmth immediately puts you at ease. She’s deeply involved, entirely hands-on, and knows every detail of how the venue works. Not from a distance, but from years of practical experience shaping the flow of each event.

On the day, John steps into a role shaped by his background as a television and production manager, orchestrating the lighting, sound, and timing with quiet mastery. But John and Emma aren’t running The Great Barn alone. They are supported by the most brilliant team. Together, they create a seamless, calm, and beautifully managed experience that couples and guests feel from start to finish.

Ceremony Spaces at The Great Barn to Suit Every Couple

One of the things that makes The Great Barn Devon so special is the choice of ceremony settings, each with its own character. First of course is the main barn itself. With its soaring beams, warm timber, and centuries-old structure, the space carries a quiet reverence. It holds the ceremony with a natural gravity and warmth that feels deeply meaningful, without belonging to any single tradition. The acoustics are fabulous. I love leading ceremonies here. Never a need for a microphone whether there are 50 or 150 guests.

Furthermore it adapts flawlessly to accommodate banquet-style dinners. It really is the perfect event space.

In the walled garden, couples can marry beneath the elegant arbour. A private, beautifully tended space enclosed by stone walls and soft planting. It feels intimate and romantic. Ideal for those wanting the outdoor wedding ceremony experience.

And for couples wishing for a religious ceremony, the local parish church just minutes away provides a traditional and deeply meaningful setting before guests return to the barns for the celebrations. Whatever your vision each ceremony space blends authenticity, practicality and beauty.

Additional Areas at The Great Barn Devon Worth Highlighting

The West Barn

A stunning counterpart to the main barn, the West Barn is a versatile, beautifully restored space often used for drinks receptions, ceremony alternatives, or as a relaxed breakout area. It has a more intimate feel and gives couples and guests additional room to flow comfortably throughout the day. The beams, stonework, and natural light make it a perfect compliment to the main barn.

The Courtyard

One of the most inviting parts of the venue, the courtyard acts as the social heart of the day and is a place where guests gather, mingle, and soak up the countryside atmosphere. At night, this area feels magical with subtle lighting and a calm rural stillness.

On-site Accommodation

One of the venue’s greatest strengths is its on-site accommodation, allowing couples and a number of guests to stay right on site. The rooms are stylish, comfortable, and beauitifully appointed

Having accommodation on the grounds adds an additional layer of calm to the wedding experience. There’s no rushing, no travel logistics, and no need for taxis. Instead, the celebration unfolds gently, and the evening ends with everyone already exactly where they need to be.

Hidden away from the main flow of the venue is a serene, private bridal room. It’s a peaceful retreat where couples can prepare, take a breath, or enjoy a quiet moment amidst the celebrations.

The Bar

The dedicated bar area ensures that the rhythm of the day remains smooth and natural. It supports the transition from meal to evening celebrations perfectly, keeping guests refreshed and the atmosphere lively.

Handfasting Ceremonies are some of the most beautiful and talked-about symbolic rituals in modern weddings. Two hands gently bound together, cords intertwined to represent love and unity; it’s romantic, photogenic, and steeped in history.

I completely understand why it appeals to so many couples. Over the years, I’ve performed many handfasting ceremonies, as well as other rituals that have been chosen for deeply personal reasons. I particularly love when couples choose to reimagine or modernise a piece of their own cultural heritage through symbolic ritual — taking something rooted in their ancestry and making it feel relevant, inclusive, and true to who they are today.

But I’ve made a conscious choice not to promote handfasting ceremonies (or any other symbolic ritual) as part of my standard offering. Not because I don’t appreciate them, but because my focus lies somewhere else entirely, I offer an alternative option.

And that brings me to a word that’s perhaps a little overused these days yet absolutely central to what I do: authenticity.

Because in a world filled with trends, Instagram posts, Pinterest-perfect moments, and photo opportunities, authenticity is what keeps a ceremony honest. It’s what makes it yours.

That doesn’t mean I believe other celebrants who embrace symbolic ritual are any less authentic, far from it. Every celebrant has their own way of creating meaning, and that’s the beauty of this work. My choice simply reflects the kind of ceremony that feels most aligned with me and the couples who are drawn to my approach.

What’s the allure of handfasting ceremonies?

When couples begin planning their wedding ceremony, it’s not long before Pinterest boards, social media feeds, and wedding blogs start filling with beautiful images of ribbons, cords, and hands bound together. Handfasting ceremonies have become one of the most visually striking and talked-about symbolic rituals in modern weddings.

And I understand why. There’s something undeniably captivating about the idea of two hands, joined and wrapped, symbolising the binding of lives, hearts, and futures. It’s romantic. It’s ancient. It photographs beautifully.

Yet, despite all this, I’ve made a conscious choice not to promote or include handfasting ceremonies as a standard part of the ceremonies I write and officiate. This is not because I disapprove or dismiss them, but because of how I choose to work as a celebrant.

This decision is grounded in authenticity, that same word we began with, and it’s the quality that sits at the very heart of my work.

authenticity and symbolism

Let me be clear: I have nothing against symbolism. In fact, wedding ceremonies are full of it.

When two people exchange rings, when they speak their vows, or even when they take each other’s hands and look into one another’s eyes. These are all profoundly symbolic acts.

The difference, for me, lies in the source of that symbolism.

The most meaningful moments are those that grow naturally from the couple’s own story, the gestures and words that already hold deep meaning for them. I don’t believe in adding ritual for the sake of it, or choosing a symbolic act simply because it’s popular on social media or looks good in photos.

Handfasting Ceremonies can certainly hold meaning, but for many couples, it’s something they’ve seen and admired rather than something that truly reflects their beliefs or backgrounds. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that, but I’ve found that when we strip away the “shoulds” and “trends,” what remains is something deeper: raw, real, unadorned love.

That’s the space where I work best.

That said, when couples feel drawn to a particular symbolic element, be it handfasting ceremonies or any of the many other rituals on offer I absolutely welcome them. Indeed, I’ve performed many over the years, everything from jumping the broom and crowning ceremonies to candle and planting ceremonies. When they arise naturally through conversation, they often become some of the most heartfelt moments of the day.

What I don’t do is lead with ritual. I let it emerge.

Respecting the meaning behind handfasting ceremonies

It’s important to say this clearly: I have no objection to handfasting ceremonies. In fact, I have great respect for its heritage and for the people for whom it holds true spiritual or cultural meaning.

For many couples, it’s a way of honouring ancestry, spirituality, or simply the symbolism of unity. And when that connection is genuine, it can be incredibly moving to witness.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of including a variety of rituals in ceremonies where those elements each felt right for the people involved.

My personal choice not to actively promote symbolic rituals isn’t about disapproval. It’s about alignment. My approach is built around honesty and storytelling, so I prefer to let those symbolic ideas surface naturally through our conversations, rather than suggesting them from the outset.

That way, if you do decide to include something like a handfasting ceremony, it’s because it truly belongs in your day and not because it’s expected or fashionable.

What “authenticity” means in my ceremonies

When I talk about authenticity, I mean honesty. Simplicity. Presence.

It’s about creating a ceremony where the emotion is real, where laughter bubbles up naturally, where tears fall because something genuine has been said, where silence carries meaning.

If your love story is best told through words, that’s what we’ll craft. If your relationship shines through laughter and shared looks, we’ll build a ceremony that celebrates that. If the most sacred moment for you is simply saying your vows, then that’s where we’ll linger.

For me, those moments, the unscripted smiles, the glances, the emotions before “I do” are the real rituals of a wedding.

The power of simplicity

Social media has made us all a little obsessed with what a moment looks like rather than how it feels. Handfasting ceremonies, like many other symbolic rituals, can sometimes become more about the aesthetics, the colours of the cords, the poses for the photographer, than about the quiet emotional truth behind them.

It’s in the trembling voice during vows, the soft squeeze of hands, the laughter that breaks the tension, the breath you both take when you realise this is it.

Simplicity gives space for emotion. It allows the moment to be alive rather than staged. And for me, that’s what authenticity looks like.

Staying true to my craft

Every celebrant brings their own energy and philosophy to their work. Some are ritualists, weaving ancient practices into modern love stories. Others are storytellers, crafting cinematic arcs. Some are deeply spiritual; others are playful and irreverent.

My own craft sits firmly in the realm of authentic storytelling; ceremonies that sound and feel like the couple I’m standing with.

Because of that, I choose not to actively promote symbolic rituals like handfasting ceremonies. Not because they lack meaning, but because they don’t align with the simplicity and honesty that I value.

When couples mention them, we explore them together. Sometimes, through those conversations, a ritual naturally becomes part of the ceremony, one that fits effortlessly and genuinely. And when that happens, it’s perfect.

Many wonderful celebrants do specialise in symbolic or ritual-based ceremonies. If that’s the kind of energy that speaks to you, I encourage you to seek them out. The beauty of choosing a celebrant-led wedding is that you can find someone whose style aligns perfectly with your own.

But when I stand with you on your wedding day, I want every word and gesture to feel alive, personal, and true — never rehearsed or performed just because “that’s what people do.”

When I officiate, I’m not playing a role. I’m being with you — holding space, speaking truth, witnessing love in its rawest form. That’s my ritual. That’s my ceremony.

Supporting your choices

Do handfasting ceremonies call to you? Do they connect with your spirituality, your ancestry, or your creative spirit? If they do, I wholeheartedly support that. Truly.

In fact, I love it when couples have the confidence to choose rituals that resonate deeply with them. I’ll always encourage you to explore what feels right. And if that means finding another celebrant who performs Handfasting Ceremonies beautifully, I’ll help you find them.

Because your ceremony should feel right for you. And my role is not to impose my way, but to stay true to mine while respecting yours.

Authenticity is not about saying, “My way is the only way.” It’s about saying, “This is my way and I honour yours.”

In closing

So no I don’t promote Handfasting Ceremonies. My work is centred on presence, emotion, and truth. It’s about helping you stand in your love and speak from the heart without needing to tie it up in symbols.

But when a ritual holds genuine meaning for you, when it arises naturally, from who you are, then I embrace it fully. And I’ve had the privilege of performing many over the years, each one unique because it belonged wholly to the couple before me.

So if you’re looking for a ceremony that feels personal, grounded, and real, that’s where I come in. Click the link here to get in touch.

Vow renewals have been steadily gaining popularity in recent years. From intimate ceremonies to elaborate destination events, couples across the world are choosing to reaffirm their commitment in ways that rival, and sometimes surpass, their original weddings. But behind the glittering invitations and Instagram-worthy setups lies a question worth pondering: are vow renewals a genuine celebration of enduring love, or have they become just another cultural trend—a particularly American import designed as a socially acceptable excuse to throw a party?

To answer that, it helps to understand the roots of vow renewals, their evolution, and why they continue to captivate couples, wedding planners, and the media alike.

The origins of vow renewals: a brief HISTORICAL background

The concept of reaffirming one’s commitment is hardly new. Historically, couples have marked anniversaries and milestones in ways that often resembled modern-day vow renewals. In some cultures, couples would perform rituals to recommit to each other during significant anniversaries, especially when life had presented challenges, such as surviving war, illness, or personal hardships.

In Western contexts, however, the formalisation of vow renewals as an event distinct from a wedding is relatively modern. There is evidence of church ceremonies ‘a thanksgiving for marriage’ for married couples to reaffirm their vows dating back to the 19th century, often tied to milestone anniversaries such as the 25th (silver) or 50th (golden). These events were more solemn than celebratory, focusing on reflection and the acknowledgment of a shared journey rather than spectacle.

The tradition remained niche for decades. Vow renewals were largely reserved for couples who had experienced hardships, or for older generations, where such ceremonies carried moral and spiritual significance rather than social or commercial appeal.

THE RISE OF VOW RENEWALS IN CONTEMPORARY CULTURE

In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, vow renewals began to evolve into a more mainstream cultural phenomenon, particularly in the United States. Several factors contributed to this shift:

The Wedding Industry Boom: The rise of the multi-billion-dollar wedding industry made celebrations around love and commitment more elaborate than ever. Wedding magazines, reality TV, and social media fuelled a desire not just to marry, but to celebrate that marriage repeatedly, with style.

Celebrity Influence: High-profile celebrities like Beyonce and Jay Z, David and Victoria Beckham and Sharon and the late Ozzy Osbourne have renewed their vows. Some with elaborate productions and media coverage and others privately. These events helped normalise and glamorise the practice, making it aspirational for the average couple.

Social Media and Experience Culture: Today, experiences particularly those that can be shared online carry cultural weight. Vow renewals offer the perfect blend of nostalgia, celebration, and photo opportunities. Instagram-ready events and elaborate ceremonies make for content that both celebrates love and signals social status.

Changing Attitudes Toward Marriage: Modern couples are increasingly interested in personalising their weddings and anniversaries. For many, vow renewals are not about obligation or religion but about reclaiming a commitment in a way that reflects who they are now, rather than who they were on their wedding day.

A CEREMONY WITHOUT LEGAL STRINGS ATTACHED

It’s important to note that vow renewals are purely ceremonial. Unlike a wedding, they carry no legal weight—no new marriage license is required, and the ceremony does not alter a couple’s legal status.

Whether performed in a church, on a beach, or at home, the event is entirely symbolic, serving as a public or private reaffirmation of commitment rather than a legal contract. This ceremonial nature gives couples flexibility to personalise their vows, locations, and format without the constraints of legal requirements, making the renewal an emotional and symbolic milestone rather than a binding legal act.

ARE VOW RENEWALS GIMMICKS? OR MEANINGFUL MILESTONES?

Despite their popularity, vow renewals are often met with scepticism. Critics argue that they can be:

Commercialised Events: Many vow renewals mirror weddings in expense and extravagance raising the question of whether the ceremony is more about love or social display.

Socially Prescribed Celebrations: Just as weddings themselves have been critiqued as ritualised social obligations, vow renewals can become a performance, pressured by social norms, friends, and family expectations rather than personal desire.

American Imports: Some cultural observers point out that while small forms of reaffirmation exist worldwide, the large-scale, party-centric vow renewal is distinctly American in style and substance. Much like Halloween, Black Friday, or Valentine’s Day, the U.S. often repackages traditional ideas into commercially viable, highly publicised experiences.

Yet, dismissing vow renewals as purely gimmicky overlooks their potential depth. For many couples, a vow renewal is profoundly meaningful—a way to mark survival through challenges, celebrate growth, or reaffirm promises in a way that resonates with their current life stage. Unlike a wedding, which can be laden with family politics, planning stress, and expectations, a vow renewal can be entirely self-directed, making it a uniquely personal a

THE PSYCHOLOGY BEHIND VOW RENEWALS

Why do couples feel compelled to renew their vows? Experts suggest several psychological and emotional motivations:

Acknowledgment of Growth: Marriage is dynamic, and couples evolve together over time. A vow renewal can recognise personal and relational growth, reminding each partner of the journey they’ve taken.

Ritual and Memory: Humans are ritualistic creatures. Celebrating milestones with ceremonies strengthens emotional bonds and solidifies memories, which can have long-term benefits for relational satisfaction.

Public Affirmation: For some, reaffirming vows in front of family and friends can reinforce accountability and commitment. It transforms the abstract concept of enduring love into a tangible, social experience.

Healing and Second Chances: Vow renewals can also serve as a symbolic reset for couples who have weathered rough patches. Recommitting in a ceremonial way provides closure on the past and hope for the future.

TRENDS IN VOW RENEWALS TODAY

Recent trends highlight the diversity of vow renewal experiences:

Destination Renewals: Couples are embracing travel-oriented vow renewals, sometimes in locations far from their original wedding venue.

Intimate Gatherings: Not all vow renewals are grandiose. Many couples opt for small, private ceremonies with close family and friends, focusing on connection rather than spectacle.

Themed Ceremonies: Some couples use vow renewals as an opportunity for creativity—recreating wedding themes, adopting seasonal motifs, or even referencing popular culture.

Eco-conscious Celebrations: With growing awareness around sustainability, some vow renewals incorporate low-waste practices, blending traditional rituals with modern values.

The variety of approaches demonstrates that while some vow renewals lean into extravagance, others remain intimate, meaningful, and deeply persona

CONCLUSION

Vow renewals straddle the line between heartfelt tradition and cultural trend. While critics may dismiss them as gimmicky or overly Americanised, their enduring popularity suggests they fulfill an emotional need that transcends commerce: the desire to pause, reflect, and recommit. Whether lavish or low-key, vow renewals invite couples to honour the journey they’ve shared and to celebrate the promise of the road ahead.

Perhaps, in the end, it doesn’t matter whether vow renewals are a party or a ritual. What matters is that they provide couples with the opportunity to celebrate something precious: the enduring commitment to each other—however they choose to do it.

FINAL THOUGHTS

I’ll admit, I remain in two minds about vow renewals. At times, they can come across as more about the spectacle than the sentiment. But if a couple genuinely wishes to celebrate and reaffirm their continued love and commitment—not simply use a vow renewal as a convenient excuse for another party—then I’m wholeheartedly in favour. I am all about authenticity, and when a renewal is done with intention, honesty, and meaning, it’s worth celebrating. If that’s you, I’d love to hear from you.

Where it is and a bit of its history

Deer Park Country House is a Grade II listed building, tucked away within the charming parish of Buckerell, near Honiton in East Devon. The estate boasts approximately 80 acres of exclusive-use grounds and house, ensuring complete privacy and a fabulous intimate setting for the most romantic wedding day.

The house has hosted many eloquent families during its colourful history. In the early 1700’s a wealthy landowner, Nicholas Fry, inherited the property from his uncle. It is believed that the current property was created by Nicholas after remodelling an older residence. Sadly, he passed away just 7 years after becoming the owner. Nicholas’ son, Henry, inherited the property from him, but was the last of the Fry family to reside there.

Following his death in 1772, Deer Park passed from one wealthy family to the next for over two centuries, until 1947, when it was bought and turned into a hotel. After being a hotel for many decades, it now operates as a luxury wedding and events venue, specialising in exclusive use.

When you have Deer Park all to yourself, you can truly sink into the peace and beauty of the grounds and the country house. Wander from the elegant drawing room to the vintage-inspired restaurant, the sunlit conservatory, and the charming orangery, all yours to enjoy without interruption.

A venue that makes everything perfect

Deer Park is an outstanding wedding venue for good reason. The setting is breathtakingly beautiful, offering that rare combination of elegance and ease. It feels truly special without ever being overly formal or stuffy. There’s a relaxed, “shabby chic” charm to the place that makes couples fall in love with it and makes guests feel instantly at home.

From the moment you arrive, there’s a sense that everything has been thoughtfully considered, but nothing feels forced. That easy atmosphere is one of the many reasons I enjoy working at Deer Park so much.

As it’s an exclusive use wedding venue it means that you can have Deer Park for longer than just your wedding day, too. So if you would like to make a weekend of it, then it’s yours.

The amazingly helpful and friendly team will cater to your every need and there are plenty of activities to keep you occupied; lawn games, croquet, guided walks, clay shooting, archery, falconry, and fly-fishing. I have spoken to many grooms over the years who have really enjoyed filling the long wait before the ceremony with a bit of competitive clay pigeon shooting with their ushers.

This delightful elegant wedding venue is perfect for families and friends travelling to celebrate your special day with you. 32 beautifully designed bedrooms welcome you along with two stylish self-catering houses—perfect for hosting everyone in comfort.

And for something a little magical, the Bridal Suite takes the form of a fairytale treehouse, tucked amongst ancient oaks, (it can just be seen in the image above) complete with a log burner, a roll-top bath, and a wrap-around balcony that feels like it was made just for you.

Stunning wedding ceremony spaces inside and out

Now, of course, as a wedding celebrant, I’m always on the lookout for ceremony spaces that feel both beautiful and personal. Deer Park ticks both of these boxes. I’ve had the honour of leading countless ceremonies here, from outdoor vows under the summer house to indoor celebrations filled with character and charm.

The grounds are immaculately kept, perfect for outdoor ceremonies, drinks receptions, and unforgettable wedding photos. The setting at the summer house never fails to be a special place, so romantic, but it smells amazing too when the flowers are out. And the wisteria tunnel leading to the summer house? Absolutely jaw-dropping when in bloom.

This year Deer Park had begun holding ceremonies in their beautiful walled garden. Last month I was lucky to officiate my first ceremony in the dappled shade provided by the apple trees. Could this trump the summer house as an outdoor space? The staff tell me it’s becoming as popular. In my opinion it is a different vibe but equally special; it has a real mediterranean atmosphere and energy and very definitely worth considering. Simply you could not go wrong with either.

If the weather is unkind, the house lends itself to gorgeous wedding ceremonies, with rooms overlooking the estate. Lit candles and floral embellishments ensure the setting is very romantic for you to exchange your vows. Of course, if you choose to have a celebrant-led wedding, these vows can be personalised to reflect not just your love story, but the setting too.

So, whether you’re planning for blue skies or need a beautiful Plan B indoors, Deer Park offers flexibility and style in equal measure. I’m sure my images speak for themselves! These are just two of the indoor options available.

<img decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://fanfareceremonies.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Untitled-design-2-1024x576.jpg" alt="A collage of images of outdoor and indoor ceremony spaces at Deer Park Country Houses featuring the summer house, the walled garden, the orangery and drawing room

a team that truly are a dream

One of the things that really sets Deer Park Country House apart is the incredible team behind it. I’ve worked closely with them not only for weddings, but also for personal events. Indeed, I chose Deer Park for my own 60th birthday party I have to say, every experience has been seamless.

They’re calm, professional, and brilliantly organised, but always warm and approachable too. They have that rare ability to be present and supportive without ever being intrusive. This creates such a positive atmosphere for everyone involved. Nothing is too much trouble for them. As someone who often works behind the scenes as well as front and centre, I can tell you that makes all the difference.

Food to Remember

Weddings at Deer Park are as delicious as they are beautiful. The food here is unforgettable, fresh, flavourful, and lovingly prepared, with much of it grown right on site in their very own walled garden. They like to use local suppliers for produce they do not create in-house, which is perfect for those of you who are conscious of your carbon footprint. Whether they are catering for 190 guests in the beautiful orangery that overlooks the Italian Garden, or a smaller party in one of the many other spaces available, your taste buds will be tantalized.

The food at my own celebration was mouth-wateringly delicious, and I can highly recommend it. It’s just another detail that shows how much care and pride the team at Deer Park puts into every event, especially weddings.

Deer Park – My final thoughts

This spectacular house continues to be one of my favourite venues to work at and not just because it’s practically on my doorstep (although that certainly helps!). It just gets everything so right.

It’s stylish but never stiff, professional but never impersonal. It’s a place where you feel genuinely cared for. Whether you’re the couple, a guest, or even someone lucky enough to be part of the team helping to bring the day to life.

So if you’re considering Deer Park Country House for your wedding, I wholeheartedly recommend it. (Here’s a link to their website for full details.) And if you’re looking for a celebrant who knows the venue inside out and won’t charge you a travel fee to get there, I’d love to chat.
While receptions often steal the spotlight with the food, flowers and dancing, nothing captures the heart more than the wedding ceremony vows. The ceremony and those words of commitment are what everything else is built on. The meaning behind your wedding ceremony vows transform your day from a celebration into a commitment and the promises or what binds two people together in front of their loved ones.

Your wedding ceremony vows are where the real magic happens. They’re deeply personal, often emotional, and heartfelt. Whether you want to stick with something traditional, write your own, or do a blend of both, my role is to guide you so that your wedding ceremony vows feel true to you and are so meaningful that they last a lifetime.

THE MEANING BEHIND WEDDING CEREMONY VOWS

Wedding ceremony vows aren’t just about pretty words. They’re about making promises that matter—promises to love, to support, to respect, and to grow together. They set the tone for your marriage and act as a compass for the journey ahead.

Some of my couples come to me knowing exactly what they want to say. Others feel overwhelmed at the thought of writing vows. Let me assure you—there is no right or wrong when it comes to your wedding ceremony vows. What matters is that they reflect your story and your values as a couple.

Traditionally, vows emphasised duty, devotion, and faithfulness, often framed through religious or cultural customs. Modern wedding ceremony vows, however, tend to celebrate individuality, shared values, and a deep respect for partnership. Couples today often see them as both a declaration and a roadmap: a set of guiding principles for their future together.

Think of vows as the mission statement of your relationship. They don’t have to cover every detail of life, but they should reflect what matters most: love, respect, support, and trust.

And here’s something that often surprises couples: your personal wedding ceremony vows are not the same as the legal words required to make your marriage official.

Every legal wedding ceremony whether civil or or religious includes two sets of mandatory statements:

The declaratory words – where you state that you are free and willing to marry.

The contractual words – where you formally take each other as husband, wife, or spouse.

Those words are what legalise your marriage in the eyes of the law.

Your wedding ceremony vows, however, are different. They’re not about legalities—they’re about love. These are the words where you express your personal promises, share your story, and set intentions for your future together. They’re deeply emotional and symbolic, rather than legal.

This distinction often comes as a relief to couples who worry about “getting it wrong.” You can’t get your vows wrong—they don’t carry legal weight. They’re yours to shape however you want, with as much creativity and personality as you like.

TRADITIONAL WEDDING VOWS

For centuries, many couples have chosen the familiar wording passed down through religious and cultural traditions. The famous Christian vows, for example, often include:

“To have and to hold, from this day forward”

“For better, for worse, for richer, for poorer”

“In sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, until death do us part.”

Other traditions may vary: Hindu ceremonies often weave in vows tied to each step around a sacred fire, symbolizing commitments to harmony, strength, prosperity, and love. Jewish ceremonies traditionally incorporate the “Ketubah” (marriage contract) and the recitation of sacred blessings.

For some, traditional vows feel timeless and grounding. They connect you to centuries of couples who have stood in the same place and made the same promises. They’re short, familiar, and powerful.

But many couples I work with love the freedom to personalise their vows. They want to weave in their own words, inside jokes, and heartfelt promises. Sometimes they strike a romantic, poetic tone; other times, they keep things light, fun, and full of laughter. Both are perfect, because both are real.

HOW WE CAN WORK ON YOUR WEDDING CEREMONY VOWS TOGETHER

While traditional vows remain meaningful, more couples today are choosing to write their own. Personal wedding ceremony vows allow you to speak from the heart, share your story, and inject humour, personality, or intimate details that wouldn’t otherwise appear in a standard ceremony.

Think about it: your vows might mention how your partner makes the world’s worst coffee but the best Sunday mornings. Or they might highlight the long-distance calls that kept your love alive across continents. Personalised vows remind everyone present—most importantly, your partner—why this love is yours and yours alone.

When you work with me as your celebrant, you have the freedom to create vows that are truly yours. If you’d like, I can guide you through the process of writing them—helping you reflect on your relationship, capture your voice, and balance storytelling with promises.

On the day itself, you have options:

You can repeat after me, which takes the pressure off having to remember every word.

Or, you can read your vows directly from a keepsake booklet I prepare for you.

A few couples, very few I may add, have even memorised them

MY TIPS FOR WRITING PERSONAL WEDDING CEREMONY VOWS

If you’d like to write your own vows, here’s the advice I usually share with couples: First and forecmost I cannot write them for you. Your wedding ceremony vows are your promises to one another. What I can do however is point you in the right direction.

Reflect on your story – Think about the moments that define your relationship.

Keep it balanced – Mix heartfelt emotion with clear promises for the future.

Be concise – Around 1–2 minutes is perfect.

Choose your tone – Romantic, funny, poetic, or a blend—it should feel like you.

Practice out loud – It helps you feel confident when emotions are high on the day.

Most importantly – don’t forget to say “I love you”

And remember, if you get stuck, I’m here to help. Sometimes all it takes is a gentle nudge to unlock the words that have been in your heart all along.

DELIVERING YOUR WEDDING CEREMONY VOWS ON THE DAY

This is the part couples often worry about most, but I promise it’s not as daunting as it seems. I’ll be right there to guide you through. Speak slowly, take a breath when you need to, and look at your partner. Don’t be afraid if your voice shakes or if you laugh or cry—those raw emotions are what make vows so moving.

A KEEPSAKE FOR LIFE

For me, your wedding ceremony vows aren’t just for the wedding day. They’re something to hold onto and revisit throughout your marriage. That’s why I always give my couples a keepsake copy. Many frame them, reread them on anniversaries, or simply keep them tucked away as a quiet reminder of why they chose each other.

FINAL THOUGHTS

As your celebrant, my job is to help you create a ceremony that feels authentic, personal, and memorable. And at the heart of it all are the wedding ceremony vows—the promises that will guide your life together. When all is said and done, the cake will be eaten, the flowers will fade, and the music will stop—but your vows will remain. They are the foundation of your marriage, the truest reflection of your love, and the most personal part of your ceremony.

Whether you choose the comfort of tradition, the intimacy of personalised words, or a blend of both, remember: vows are about making a promise that feels real to you. They don’t have to be perfect, poetic, or even polished—they just need to be sincere and authentically you.

Because at the end of the day, those few words—spoken through tears, laughter, or trembling hands—are what transform your wedding from a celebration into a lifelong union.

So whichever route you choose to go down know that your wedding ceremony vows will be perfect simply because they’re yours. And I’ll be right there beside you, making sure those words shine on your wedding day—and stay with you long after.

As a celebrant, I’ve had the privilege of working at some truly beautiful wedding venues. From woodlands, grand stately homes to atmospheric barns. Every space tells a different story. But there’s something about the South West that really sings to me. We’re truly blessed with landscapes that range from the rugged and wild to the lush and manicured, and beautiful wedding venues steeped in tradition and personality.

My love for this part of the world began with childhood holidays—days spent exploring hidden coves, bucket and spading, crabbing, surfing and long walks along windswept coastlines. That early connection only deepened when I was lucky enough to marry a Devonian, weaving the South West even more firmly into the fabric of my life. Cornwall holds a special place in my heart where to be honest the bulk of my family holidays were spent and indeed still do; there are many beautiful wedding venues there that I have not included in this list. I’m saving them for another time. This blog concentrates on beautiful wedding venues in Devon, of course but also Dorset and Somerset.

I’ve been lucky enough to lead ceremonies at the majority of these venues indeed am proud to be a recommended supplier for many, though there are one or two I’ve not yet had the pleasure. I’m very much hoping to soon. Each place I’ve chosen offers something special, and together they reflect a theme I love: backdrops that pair beautifully with warm, relaxed ceremonies like the ones I create. Traditional in tone, but personal, joyful, and informal at heart and with teams that believe that no one wedding is the same and go the extra mile to ensure that your day is the very best.

So here they are—my top 10 beautiful wedding venues in the South West in no particular order, each one a gem in its own right.

1. Smedmore House – A beautiful wedding venue by the sea

Set along the Jurassic Coast, Smedmore House in Dorset is private, peaceful, and rich with history. A picture of the house is the top image of the photographs below. Although you cannot see the sea in this photograph I assure you there is the most spectacular ceremony space with the sea providing the most heavenly backdrop. I’ve been lucky to have led a ceremony there. It offers a stunning coastal setting for elegant yet intimate weddings.

Why I love it: A true hidden gem where history meets horizon.

2. BRICKHOUSE VINEYARD – for wine enthusiastS

With sweeping views of the vines and Devon’s countryside, Brickhouse Vineyard intertwines rustic charm with timeless elegance. A mediterranean inspired beautiful wedding venue originally renown for elopement and micro weddings indeed I led my first ever elopement ceremony here a few years ago; it now caters for larger celebrations as well.

Ideal for: Couples who love wine and nature and who want a very private setting.

3. North Cadbury court – a beautiful wedding venue for weekend celebrations

A stately home like no other, North Cadbury Court in Somerset offers total flexibility and fun—from rooftop golf to underground discos. It’s a place where elegance meets full-blown celebration. I’m thrilled to leading my first ceremony there in December 2026. A beautiful wedding venue for winter.

What’s special: You make it your own—from Friday to Sunday, it’s all yours.

4. Deer Park Country House – a beautiful wedding venue with country chic

This Georgian manor blends classic charm with vibrant, colourful gardens and quirky touches (yes, there’s a treehouse suite!). Deer Park is polished but never pretentious. It also happens to be the venue I work most often. It was difficult to choose an image of one of the many couples who have chosen both me and the Deer Park. So I have picked two the feature image for this blog and indeed the one below. It really is an incredible venue. It’s no wonder it is so popular. The food is great, the team are professional and the setting heavenly.

Why it stands out: Stylish, and full of warmth and personality – dare I say it sounds a bit like me! We are a perfect match.

Photo credit: Tara Statton Photography https://www.tarastattonphotography.com/

The Lost Music Hall feels like the setting of a storybook—where creativity, romance, and a touch of wild magic meet. Though I haven’t had the pleasure of visiting just yet, it’s high on my list, and I’m hoping to experience its charm firsthand very soon.

Gardens spill out in all directions, ivy climbs the timeworn walls, and every corner of the estate seems to invite celebration. It’s the kind of place where anything feels possible

Perfect for: Free spirits, artistic souls, and couples who want their day to feel like a beautiful, unscripted adventure.

Earnshill House has an undeniable presence—elegant, grand, and yet quietly welcoming. It holds space for celebration with such grace. There’s a sense of occasion as soon as you arrive, yet it never feels stuffy or overly formal. It’s a place where tradition and warmth live side by side. You have exclusive use of the house, fine dining by Michelin-trained chefs, and a dedicated team to bring your vision to life — your wedding at Earnshill will be entirely your own.

Why so special?: A beautiful wedding venue that speaks softly but leaves a lasting impression. The in house catering team are also off the charts good!

7. CAME HOUSE – a beautiful wedding venue near DORCHESTER in DORSET

This beautiful wedding venue gives you the feeling that it doesn’t just whisper elegance it breathes it. I am longing to be asked to do a ceremony here. As someone who cares about the meaning behind the words, the shape of a moment, I love a setting that meets that intention. Came House certainly appears to do just that. Furthermore it is a family home not just a beautiful wedding venue and I’m guessing that it has been a home to friendship, laughter and love for centuries.

Why I adore it? It carries beauty, history, and heart with quiet confidence—elegant, lived-in, and deeply in tune with the kind of meaning you want ceremonies to hold.

Approaching Pynes along the majestic tree-lined drive, the large ornate front doors welcome you, instantly making you feel like you’re entering somewhere truly special. The house oozes period drama romance—think soft light, grand rooms, and the Devon countryside all around.

A relaxed, creative haven tucked in the Mid Devon hills. Hayne offers restored barns, vibrant gardens, and a DIY spirit that invites couples to make it their own. Magical and enchanting are words that describe quite perfectly the energy at Hayne Devon. It’s a haven.

Best for: Those who want to mix soul, nature, and celebration.

10. THE GREAT BARN – uniquely stylish that’s captured the spirit of the times

With towering ceilings, ancient beams, and golden light pouring into the barn, The Great Barn Devon is a unique spacious almost sacred event space. Ceremonies can unfold in the barn or in the walled garden’s sunlit Arbour.

The barn transitions effortlessly from vows to celebration, with flexible spaces for dining, dancing, and quiet moments under festoon lights and stars. I have led three ceremonies here in 2025.

Why it stands out: It feels sacred almost church like and the lighting is to die for.

<img decoding="async" width="1024" height="682" src="https://fanfareceremonies.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/The-Great-Barn-Devon-1024x682.webp" alt="The exterior of the Great Barn in Devon - a beautiful wedding venue.

FINAL THOUGHTS

From candlelit barns, stately homes to wildflower meadows, the South West has some of the most beautiful wedding venues in the UK. And what ties these places together is more than looks—it’s the stories they help create.

Whether you’re drawn to historic grandeur or countryside calm, I hope this list inspires your venue search. Most of all, I hope you find somewhere that feels like home for your love story.

If you’re looking for a celebrant who brings warmth, meaning, and a sense of fun into these wonderful spaces, I’m your girl. I’d love to hear from you.

There is a plethora of wedding ceremony venues in Devon to choose from, and a few hidden secret locations too! As a wedding celebrant, I’ve had the pleasure of officiating ceremonies in some of the most picturesque settings, so I thought I’d share my insights with you.

Just outside the market town of Honiton, in East Devon, is the Grade II listed building Deer Park Country House. Set in 80 acres of stunning grounds, Deer Park is a Georgian mansion offering sumptuous style and sophistication. I have been lucky enough to officiate at countless weddings here, and every single one has been unique in its own right.

Deer Park offers a variety of breathtakingly beautiful locations for couples to choose from for their ceremony. From the romantic orangery to the picturesque Italian Gardens, I have presided as a wedding celebrant for indoor and outdoor weddings. As the venue offers exclusive use to their couples, I find that both the wedding party and their guests relax from the moment they arrive. Paired with luxury accommodation, award-winning food, and exceptional service, it is little wonder why Deer Park is so popular.

When looking for wedding ceremony venues in Devon, this one always delivers intimate warmth, a pretty setting, and a magical atmosphere.

Huntsham Court

What better place to get married than a country house literally built for a bride? Indeed, Huntsham Court, once a derelict Tudor manor, was rebuilt by 1868 following the marriage of the owner Charles Arthur William Troyte to Catherine Mary Walrond in 1864. The reason? Her family did not deem the old Tudor manor suitable accommodation.

Today, this stunning manor house offers couples exclusive use of the venue and its magnificent setting. As wedding ceremony venues in Devon go, this one provides great flexibility. The estate is lucky enough to have a church at the end of its driveway, so they can offer couples religious ceremonies, licenced registrar wedding ceremonies, and independent celebrant wedding ceremonies.

Huntsham Court’s website outlines the benefits of each, but naturally, as an independent wedding celebrant, I love their description for independent ceremonies: ‘You can throw any rule book away, as it is entirely hand-crafted. This way, it reflects your personal beliefs and values.’

Huntsham Court caters for up to 130 guests, with accommodation for up to 100. However, it is their very special 2 day country house package that sets them apart. I’ve been lucky enough to experience the relaxed, friendly atmosphere this offer provides; it adds an extra special ambience to the personalised weddings I officiate.

Rockbeare Manor

Like many wedding ceremony venues in Devon, including Deer Park and Huntsham Court, Rockbeare Manor offers exclusive use of their gorgeous country house and grounds. Many couples worry about location when choosing wedding ceremony venues in Devon, however, this grand estate can be found just outside Exeter.

If the British weather is kind, then consider having your wedding ceremony in the established gardens overlooking the Manor house and Dartmoor. For indoor ceremonies, Rockbeare Manor has two stunning options: the Dining Room and the Ballroom. I promise you, the wedding ceremony photographs will be picturesque, whichever option you select. In the many wedding ceremonies I have presided over, Rockbeare Manor and its professional staff, with a great eye for detail, have always delivered.

Pynes House

Again, offering exclusive use, Pynes House is an elegant, romantic setting for weddings. If you are looking for wedding ceremony venues in Devon steeped in history, then this prestigious Georgian mansion is a must. You will be walking in the footsteps of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert nonetheless. Additionally, I can testify that you will be treated like royalty on your special day.

I have been a wedding celebrant in both the glorious gardens (yes, the sun does shine in Britain when we are lucky) and the impressive state rooms. There is a delightful choice for couples to consider, all equally spectacular.

The Great Barn

A step away from grand houses now and one of my favourite wedding ceremony venues in Devon, for its exclusive 2 day hire rule, is The Great Barn. To ensure everything is perfect for your special day, The Great Barn gives you exclusive access to the venue the day before your ceremony as part of your booking. This gives you time to decorate the space to your tastes and rehearse music and lighting for your special day.

I also love The Great Barn’s ability to cope with the unpredictability of the British weather. They have a beautiful arbour in the walled gardens outside for warm, sunny spring/summer weddings and, naturally, the magnificent Great Barn for indoor weddings. This impressive structure, with its oak vaulted ceiling, always creates a very special atmosphere. If the weather isn’t playing ball, the venue also offers a smaller barn, The West Barn, for reception drinks.

Finally, if you do want a religious wedding ceremony, they have the most picturesque church within walking distance.

Hayne Devon

Set in the rolling hills of Devon, with woodlands and orchards, is Hayne. I often get a magical, woodland fairy vibe at this remarkable location. Like The Great Barn, your booking gives you exclusive access for 2 days. There are two enchanting outdoor locations where wedding ceremonies can be held, and if the weather isn’t kind, couples can always rely on the Threshing Barn. If you are looking for wedding ceremony venues in Devon that offer a more relaxed, quintessential, but pretty vibe, then I would seriously consider this one.

Brickhouse Vineyard

You might be looking for wedding ceremony venues in Devon that are a bit different. Do you fancy having a Mediterranean vibe to your wedding day? Brickhouse Vineyard certainly delivers that. I love the versatility that this delightful venue offers couples, too. From ‘elopement’ style weddings for up to 10 guests to a full weekend wedding for 70 daytime guests, Brickhouse Vineyard can cater to your needs.

I truly love the thatched round house at this venue and the fact that even if the weather doesn’t play ball, you can still feel like you are linked to the outdoors with their floor-to-ceiling windows. Of course, as a wedding celebrant, I love outdoor weddings, and here, my couples have exchanged their personal vows overlooking vineyards and the glorious Devon countryside – perfect.

Powderham Castle

If you truly wish to feel like royalty, for just one day, then why not consider, probably one of the grandest wedding ceremony venues in Devon, Powderham Castle? Originally built in 1391, Powderham Castle has evolved considerably over the last 6 centuries into the magnificent structure we see today.

Powderham Castle has 4 licensed venues, from the State Rooms to beautiful outdoor settings for official marriage ceremonies to take place. Of course, don’t forget, if you choose to have an independent wedding celebrant officiate over your wedding ceremony, this does not have to take place at a licensed venue. Not sure what I mean? Please check out my blog, ‘What Are Wedding Celebrants‘? Finally, before I forget, if you are looking for wedding ceremony venues in Devon that allow your ‘best friend’ to attend, Powderham Castle is dog-friendly, so your pooch can be part of the celebrations too!

Mount Folly Farm

Mount Folly Farm at Bigbury is one of those wedding ceremony venues in Devon that offers the very best views! I have been lucky enough to enjoy those views on many occasions! However, Hatch, and Stretch Tents South West are companies who often provides marquees at this stunning location, can offer their services to a whole host of venues, including some I have already discussed in this blog and Little Dartmouth located on the coastal hills of the county, where the marquee provides views to Torcross and Star Point Lighthouse.

The beauty of a marquee wedding is that it can align perfectly with my own wedding service. You see, with a wedding celebrant like myself, you literally can get married anywhere! So, if you want to have a wedding in your own back garden or at a location significant to you both, then hire a marquee and book a wedding celebrant to officiate the ceremony.

That’s where my hint at hidden locations comes in, which I alluded to at the beginning of this blog. When searching for wedding ceremony venues in Devon, remember you are only limited by your imagination! Devon is filled with magical spaces that just ache to be used as a backdrop for your special day (landowner’s permission is needed, of course).

Other Venues

As you have discovered, there are so many wedding ceremony venues in Devon to explore; we are spoilt for choice! I would like to give a brief mention, therefore, to just a few more all are exceptional and offering something different : Beaconside House Clifford Barton, The Hall Exeter, East Soar Farm, Hareston Manor, and Higher Eggbeer. These are wedding venues that I have only attended once or twice or I have yet to visit (although I do have bookings in a few of these this year, which is very exciting).

I can’t wait to officiate at more weddings in these equally special locations. You never know, maybe, if you are reading this and planning your own special day, I might be lucky enough to be your wedding celebrant at one of them.

Final Thoughts

As a wedding celebrant, working in these venues is a dream. Each offers a unique ambiance, ensuring that every ceremony is distinct and memorable. The dedicated teams at these venues collaborate seamlessly, making the entire process smooth and enjoyable. I wholeheartedly recommend these wedding ceremony venues in Devon to couples seeking a breathtaking backdrop for their special day.

If you would like more information about my wedding celebrant service, I offer to personalise your special wedding day, then please get in touch with me. I’d love to chat.
