Wedding ceremony scripts can start to sound all the same especially if you’ve attended a lot of weddings. Particularly in the case of registrar-led ceremonies. Religious wedding ceremony scripts, while they follow established structures, often bring more natural variation through tradition, denomination, and the person leading them. But civil ceremonies bound by council frameworks, can feel strikingly similar.

The same phrases. The same structure. The same “insert couple here” moments dressed up as something meaningful. It’s not that these wedding ceremony scripts are bad . But they can feel functional, interchangeable and characterless. Like they’ve been lifted from a template with the gaps filled in.

And that’s because, in many cases, they have.

Recycled wedding ceremony scripts

Wedding ceremony scripts have become one of the most recycled pieces of writing in modern celebrations. Officiants rely on pre-approved wording or tried-and-tested templates. It makes sense from a logistics standpoint; efficiency, consistency, legality. But from a human standpoint? It can miss the mark.

It’s also worth acknowledging a growing trend: some councils now offer what they describe as “personalisation” within their ceremony options. On paper, this sounds like a step in the right direction. In reality, it’s a very different experience from working with a celebrant.

With registrar-led ceremonies, any personalised content typically needs to be written or sourced by the couple, submitted in advance, and approved by the council. The registrar then delivers that content within a fixed structure.

By contrast, a celebrant doesn’t just deliver your story. They help uncover it, shape it, and craft it into something cohesive and meaningful. The difference isn’t just in what’s said, but in how it’s created. Because your relationship isn’t templated.

It wasn’t built from bullet points or standard phrasing. It grew through specific moments, inside jokes, challenges, quirks, and stories that are entirely yours.

However sadly when it comes to the ceremony the very heart of the wedding many couples’ wedding ceremony scripts that could belong to anyone.

That’s where the difference lies.

Wedding ceremony scripts that celebrate you

Wedding Ceremony scripts crafted by a celebrant is not about filling in blanks. It’s about starting with a blank page and, more importantly, building a genuine relationship.

Rather than starting with pre-written options or set wording, a celebrant begins with you. Your story, your dynamic, and what truly matters to you as a couple.

But that question isn’t answered in a single meeting or a quick questionnaire. It comes from time spent getting to know you properly through conversations, shared stories, and the small details that don’t make it onto standard forms but say everything about who you are as a couple.

This is where the real difference lies.

A celebrant doesn’t just gather information—they build a connection. They begin to understand your dynamic, your humour, your rhythm as a couple. They notice how you speak about each other, what you emphasise, what you laugh about, what matters most.

That relationship is what allows them to write in a way that doesn’t just describe you; it sounds like you.

So when your ceremony is delivered, it doesn’t feel like something written about you from the outside. It feels familiar. Recognisable. As though someone has found the words that could have been written a family member or old friend.

A celebrant-led ceremony is built from that connection. It draws on your story. How you met, what you value, what makes your relationship tick, and what you want your future to feel like. It’s about capturing your voice, your energy, and the way you naturally are together.

And that’s why no two celebrant wedding ceremony scripts are ever the same. Because no two couples and no two relationships are the same.

Personalisation is not a checkbox

Many couples aren’t aware that their ceremony can be completely personalised from start to finish. What’s often presented to them, particularly in registrar-led ceremonies, are small add-ons or limited choices that feel like personalisation, but in reality are a narrow and often unsatisfying version of what’s truly possible. Registrars simply do not have the time or scope within their role to create a ceremony that comes close to the depth and individuality a celebrant can offer.

A reading here. A symbolic ritual there. Maybe a quick anecdote. Job done.

But real personalisation doesn’t work like that. It’s not a garnish. It’s the whole meal.

True personalisation in wedding ceremony scripts is an art form. It requires listening deeply, noticing patterns, and translating lived experiences into words that feel natural and resonant. It’s about rhythm, tone, and emotional timing. It’s about knowing when to bring humour in, when to pause, and when to let a moment breathe.

A well-crafted ceremony doesn’t just tell your story. It feels like your story.

Guests lean in. They laugh at the right moments. They tear up unexpectedly. And most importantly, they walk away saying, “That was so them.” Not, “That was a lovely ceremony,” but “That was exactly who they are.” That distinction matters.

Wedding ceremony scripts that move beyond “Insert Couple Here”

If you’ve attended a number of civil ceremonies, certain lines will start to feel very familiar. Phrases like, “Marriage is a lifelong journey,” or “Today marks the beginning of your new life together,” or “You have chosen to stand before your family and friends to declare your love.”

These lines are well-meaning and appropriate but they are designed to fit every couple. They are part of structured registrar scripts that need to work universally, which means they rarely go beyond the surface. The result is a ceremony that sounds polished, but not necessarily personal.

A celebrant-crafted ceremony takes a completely different approach.

Rather than relying on standardised wording, it replaces general sentiment with lived experience. It moves away from what could apply to anyone, and leans into what could only ever apply to you.

So instead of hearing something broadly true about marriage, your guests hear something specifically true about your relationship details that make them smile in recognition, moments they remember, and insights that feel genuine.

That specificity is what transforms words from pleasant to powerful.

The role of storytelling in wedding ceremony scripts

At its core, great wedding ceremony scripts are built on storytelling.

Not a timeline of events, but a narrative with texture and meaning. It highlights not just what happened, but why it mattered. It connects the dots between past, present, and future in a way that feels cohesive and emotionally true. And storytelling is not something you can shortcut. It requires intuition. Craft. Experience. The ability to shape raw material into something that flows, engages, and resonates.

That’s why ceremonies written by skilled celebrants often feel effortless because a lot of thought has gone into making them feel that way.

Why AI isn’t the answer to great wedding ceremony scripts

In a world where AI can generate speeches, vows, and even wedding ceremony scripts in seconds, it’s tempting to think: why not use it for your ceremony? After all, it’s fast. It’s convenient. It can sound polished. But here’s the thing: AI works by recognising patterns and predicting language based on what already exists. And what already exists, in the world of wedding ceremony scripts, is a vast ocean of recycled scripts.

So what you get even when it sounds good is often a remix of familiar phrasing. A slightly more sophisticated template. Words that are technically correct, but emotionally generic.

AI doesn’t know what it felt like the first time you met. It doesn’t understand the subtle dynamics of your relationship. It can’t read the room, sense the energy of your guests, or adjust tone in real time. It doesn’t pick up on the throwaway comments in conversation that turn out to be the most meaningful details. Most importantly, it doesn’t care. And that lack of human connection shows, even if it’s hard to articulate.

A ceremony is not just a piece of writing it’s a shared experience. A moment that lives in the memory of everyone present. It deserves more than an algorithm assembling words based on probability.

The value of human craft

Working with a celebrant is a collaborative process.

It involves conversations that go beyond surface-level questions. It invites reflection. Sometimes even discovery couples often find themselves seeing their own relationship in a new light as they talk it through.

From there, the celebrant shapes those insights into wedding ceremony scripts that feel authentic, engaging, and uniquely yours.

They consider pacing. Voice. Emotional arc. They think about how your guests will experience the ceremony from beginning to end. They rehearse, refine, and deliver with intention.

It’s not just writing it’s performance, storytelling, and emotional intelligence combined. That level of craft is hard to replicate, and impossible to automate.

Creating a moment that stands apart

When your ceremony is truly personalised, something shifts. It no longer feels like a formal prelude to the “real” celebration. It the meaning behind the celebration that follows.

Guests pay attention. They connect. They feel included in your story rather than simply witnessing a ritual. The ceremony becomes a highlight, not a hurdle. And for you, as a couple, it becomes a moment where you feel seen.

So, what do you want to remember?

Years from now, when you think back on your wedding day, the details may blur the flowers, the table settings, even parts of the reception.

But the feeling of the ceremony? That tends to stick.

The way it sounded. The way it felt to stand there and hear your story told out loud. The reactions from your guests. The sense that, for that moment, everything was exactly as it should be.

That’s the power of wedding ceremony scripts that put you in the spotlight.

Not in a performative way, but in a deeply personal one.

But if you’re looking for something more something that reflects who you are, rather than what’s been done before it’s worth considering a different approach.

Because personalisation in wedding ceremony scripts isn’t about ticking boxes. It’s about creating something that couldn’t belong to anyone else. And when you get that right, your ceremony doesn’t just mark the start of your marriage. It becomes one of the most meaningful parts of it.

Ready to create something that sounds like you?

There’s nothing inherently wrong with traditional or templated wedding ceremony scripts. For some couples, it’s exactly what they want. But if you’re reading this and recognising that you want more than a standard script more than something that simply “does the job”then it’s worth asking a different question.

Not “What are our options?” but “What do we actually want this moment to feel like? Because your ceremony is the one part of your wedding where everything stops, and everyone listens. It’s your story, told out loud. And you deserve for it to sound like you. If that matters to you, then working with a celebrant isn’t an extra – it’s the difference. The difference between wedding ceremony scripts that are heard and felt. The difference between something familiar… and something unforgettable. And I’d love to be the celebrant to make that happen. click here straight through to my contact page

The wedding celebrant industry in the UK has grown rapidly in recent years. As more couples seek ceremonies that feel personal, meaningful, and reflective of who they truly are, celebrant-led weddings have become an increasingly attractive option. T

Despite this growth in popularity, there are now more trained celebrants than there is demand for them. While many newly trained celebrants bring enthusiasm, passion, and fresh ideas into the industry experienced wedding celebrants like myself with some 10 years in the industry and nearing 200 ceremonies under my belt, bring a level of skill, confidence, and emotional connection that can transform a ceremony and will make a real difference.

Understanding this matters. It helps couples make informed choices and ensures that their ceremony is not only personalised, but also calm, confident, and memorable for all the right reasons.

The value of experienced wedding celebrants

Currently in England and Wales wedding celebrants focus entirely on creating and delivering the ceremony which is the emotional heart of the wedding day. They are responsible for holding the story, guiding the moment, and setting the tone for everything that follows.

Training courses for celebrants are now two a penny and I concur they provide a useful foundation. They also provide a helpful additional income for those experienced wedding celebrants who have become mentors and trainers.

These courses introduce structure, language, and basic ceremony elements. However, training alone cannot replicate the skill and insight gained from leading real weddings. Standing in front of a live audience, navigating nerves, emotions, family dynamics, and unexpected moments requires experience that can only be built over time.

Experienced wedding celebrants have had the opportunity to develop this combination of experience, skill, and connection. This makes a noticeable difference in how natural, relaxed, and meaningful a ceremony feels. They know how to adjust in the moment whether that be the slowing the pace, offering reassurance, or gently guiding a couple through tricky moments.

A crowded and competitive landscape

The growth of training courses has created a vibrant but increasingly competitive landscape. There are many experienced wedding celebrants but there are also many many newly trained celebrants entering the industry full of excitement and optimism. Few however are fully aware of the challenges: finding clients, marketing themselves effectively, and establishing a sustainable presence can be difficult.

Choice is undoubtedly a positive thing. Couples today have more options than ever before when it comes to how they marry, and that flexibility deserves to be celebrated. In the UK, couples can choose a traditional religious ceremony, a legal civil ceremony, or a celebrant-led wedding.

However, the reality is that most couples still prioritise legalising their marriage at the same time as their wedding, rather than separating the legal process from the ceremony in favour of pure personalisation. In other words a celebrant led ceremony. This means the pool of couples actively seeking celebrant-led weddings is still smaller than the number of celebrants entering the market.

While training companies understandably focus on the positive aspects of celebrancy, they do not always highlight the challenges of entering such a competitive environment, the difficulty of standing out, or the time it can take to build both skill and a client base. From my perspective, the sheer number of newly trained celebrants I feel can be sometimes be detrimental to couples, who may choose someone with enthusiasm but limited experience, skill, or ability to connect. It can also impact an experienced wedding celebrant like myself, who find themselves continually undercut on price by those still developing their craft and who are understandably keen to get their foot in the door.

Experienced wedding celebrants stand out because they combine proven skills with real-world experience, ensuring couples receive guidance and support that comes from practice, insight, and emotional awareness.

Ceremony flow makes a difference

Every wedding is unique, and every couple’s story unfolds differently. Ceremony flow is one of the most underestimated aspects of a wedding and one of the most noticeable when it’s missing.

Experienced wedding celebrants understand how to pace a ceremony intuitively. They know when to pause, when to create space for reflection, and when to guide the moment forward so it feels effortless rather than staged. Without experience, ceremonies can feel rushed, overly long, or emotionally uneven. Experienced wedding celebrants understand how to shape the ceremony so it feels natural for the couple and engaging for their guests, allowing meaningful moments to land without feeling forced.

The Growing Popularity of Friends Leading Ceremonies

Another shift within the wedding landscape is the growing popularity of couples asking friends or family members to lead their ceremony. This choice is often made with the best intentions as couples want someone who knows them well and feels personally connected to their story.

However, this trend also represents another challenge for professional experienced wedding celebrants in an already highly competitive environment. Many couples understandably underestimate the responsibility involved in leading a ceremony, and it’s often only when a friend steps into the role that they realise there is far more to it than simply reading words aloud.

Holding space, managing emotion, pacing the ceremony, and maintaining calm presence all require skill and confidence that come with experience. While some friends rise to the occasion, others find the role overwhelming, highlighting the value of experienced wedding celebrants who are trained, emotionally equipped, and practiced at guiding such an important moment.

This shift doesn’t diminish the appeal of celebrant-led weddings, but it adds another layer to an already complex and competitive industry that remains in its infancy. One where experience, skill, and connection continue to make a meaningful difference.

Emotional awareness makes a difference

Weddings are wonderful happy occasions, but they are also layered with emotion. Nerves, excitement, family dynamics, and expectation all meet in one moment.

Seasoned experienced wedding celebrants bring emotional awareness to the ceremony. They can read the room, sense when reassurance is needed, and adapt seamlessly if emotions run high. They understand when to soften their tone or lift it, when to pause, and when to quietly support a couple through a particularly emotional moment.

Experienced wedding celebrants have encountered the full spectrum of emotions that can arise during a wedding ceremony. Their ability to respond thoughtfully and calmly develops over time, through experience and genuine connection with couples. This emotional intelligence ensures the ceremony feels supportive, heartfelt, and authentic.

Presence and energy anchors the ceremony

Presence is the quiet confidence that helps a ceremony feel grounded, calm, and held. It’s not about performance or being the centre of attention; it’s about creating the right energy and a sense of trust and reassurance.

Experienced wedding celebrants know how to hold space without dominating it. They create focus and calm even when unexpected moments arise, allowing the ceremony to continue smoothly and without stress.

Presence grows with time, experience, and self-awareness. Experienced wedding celebrants’ energy is often what separates a good ceremony from a truly memorable one.

Experience, Skill and Connection Bring refinement

True confidence in the role of a wedding celebrant doesn’t come from a certificate alone. It comes from years of leading real weddings, building relationships with couples, and navigating the unexpected with grace.

Experienced wedding celebrants bring a combination of skill, presence, and genuine connection that ensures a ceremony feels authentic, personal, and seamless from start to finish. Understanding the difference experience makes helps couples choose a celebrant who can deliver their dream ceremony.

Whether it’s guiding a nervous couple, reading the emotional energy of the room, or seamlessly adjusting to last-minute changes, experienced wedding celebrants excel because they have honed these abilities through practice, reflection, and dedication.

Choosing the right wedding celebrant for you

When choosing a wedding celebrant, you are inviting someone to hold the emotional centre of your day.

Choosing experienced wedding celebrants ensures your ceremony is calm, flowing, and heartfelt. Don’t under estimate the skill involved or the difference it can make. Experience brings confidence. Skill brings flow. Connection brings heart.

By choosing a celebrant who embodies all three, couples can trust that their wedding ceremony will be everything they imagined and more. It allows couples to relax, knowing that the most important moments of their day are being guided with expertise, sensitivity, and emotional awareness.

Tucked deep within the rolling countryside of Devon lies a venue that feels as though it has stepped out of a storybook. The Great Barn Devon is more than just a place for weddings or celebration. It is a setting that embodies the full charm of rural England while offering the style, sophistication, and experience today’s couples expect.

If you’re searching for your dream wedding venue, The Great Barn, Devon delivers a space and atmosphere that is at once historic and contemporary, intimate yet expansive, grand but never overwhelming. There is a reason it has become one of Devon’s most talked-about, ultimate countryside venues, and I was lucky enough to lead three ceremonies there in 2025.

Table of Contents

The Great Barn nestled in rural Devon

The Great Barn is a barn wedding venue like no other

The People behind The Great Barn

Ceremony spaces at The Great Barn to suit everyone

Additional Areas at The Great Barn Devon Worth Highlighting

The West Barn

The Courtyard

On-site Accommodation

The Bridal room

The Bar

In-House Catering at The Great Barn

The Great Barn is a photographer’s dream

Why the Great Barn is one of my favourite venues

Final Thoughts

THE GREAT BARN nestled in rural devon IS A CLASS ACT

Part of the magic of The Great Barn is its location. Surrounded by acres of lush, undisturbed farmland, the venue sits comfortably in the village of Higher Ashton within a pastoral landscape of rolling hills, hedgerows, and sun-washed stone buildings. The sense of escape begins well before you even arrive: To reach it you need to navigate winding country lanes and a steep descent but are still only 30 or so minutes from Exeter City Centre.

The Great Barn therefore maintains convenience, striking a rare balance between rural beauty and modern accessibility. It feels miles away from everything but is not difficult to get to. It’s beautifully placed striking the perfect balance of privacy and exclusivity yet remaining practical and easy for guests to reach.

Once there the character of the Great Barn becomes immediately apparent. Traditional stonework, beautifully restored architecture, and a tasteful combination of old-world charm and contemporary design create an atmosphere that is both warm and refined. Every corner feels intentional, yet nothing is contrived.

The great barn is a barn WEDDING VENUE like no other

While many barns serve as wedding venues today, few do it with the level of authenticity and grace found here. The Great Barn is, quite literally, great. It’s vast in scale, breathtaking in its height, and stunningly atmospheric.

Inside, exposed beams stretch across the ceiling like the ribs of a cathedral, giving the barn an almost spiritual sense of space. Natural light pours in softly during the day, while evenings transform the interior into something deeply romantic, with warm lighting and candlelit details that accentuate the texture of the centuries-old timbers.

Unlike many barn venues that emphasise rustic minimalism, The Great Barn blends old and new beautifully. It is elegant without being fussy, rustic without feeling rough, and incredibly versatile without losing its identity. However it is styled the barn adapts seamlessly. One of its greatest strengths, though, is that even without any decoration at all, it remains exquisite.

The People behind The Great Barn

What truly sets The Great Barn apart is the involvement of John and Emma Birkin, the couple who meticulously restored the site and remain embedded in its daily rhythm.

When you visit, you’re likely greeted by Emma, whose natural warmth immediately puts you at ease. She’s deeply involved, entirely hands-on, and knows every detail of how the venue works. Not from a distance, but from years of practical experience shaping the flow of each event.

On the day, John steps into a role shaped by his background as a television and production manager, orchestrating the lighting, sound, and timing with quiet mastery. But John and Emma aren’t running The Great Barn alone. They are supported by the most brilliant team. Together, they create a seamless, calm, and beautifully managed experience that couples and guests feel from start to finish.

Ceremony Spaces at The Great Barn to Suit Every Couple

One of the things that makes The Great Barn Devon so special is the choice of ceremony settings, each with its own character. First of course is the main barn itself. With its soaring beams, warm timber, and centuries-old structure, the space carries a quiet reverence. It holds the ceremony with a natural gravity and warmth that feels deeply meaningful, without belonging to any single tradition. The acoustics are fabulous. I love leading ceremonies here. Never a need for a microphone whether there are 50 or 150 guests.

Furthermore it adapts flawlessly to accommodate banquet-style dinners. It really is the perfect event space.

In the walled garden, couples can marry beneath the elegant arbour. A private, beautifully tended space enclosed by stone walls and soft planting. It feels intimate and romantic. Ideal for those wanting the outdoor wedding ceremony experience.

And for couples wishing for a religious ceremony, the local parish church just minutes away provides a traditional and deeply meaningful setting before guests return to the barns for the celebrations. Whatever your vision each ceremony space blends authenticity, practicality and beauty.

Additional Areas at The Great Barn Devon Worth Highlighting

The West Barn

A stunning counterpart to the main barn, the West Barn is a versatile, beautifully restored space often used for drinks receptions, ceremony alternatives, or as a relaxed breakout area. It has a more intimate feel and gives couples and guests additional room to flow comfortably throughout the day. The beams, stonework, and natural light make it a perfect compliment to the main barn.

The Courtyard

One of the most inviting parts of the venue, the courtyard acts as the social heart of the day and is a place where guests gather, mingle, and soak up the countryside atmosphere. At night, this area feels magical with subtle lighting and a calm rural stillness.

On-site Accommodation

One of the venue’s greatest strengths is its on-site accommodation, allowing couples and a number of guests to stay right on site. The rooms are stylish, comfortable, and beauitifully appointed

Having accommodation on the grounds adds an additional layer of calm to the wedding experience. There’s no rushing, no travel logistics, and no need for taxis. Instead, the celebration unfolds gently, and the evening ends with everyone already exactly where they need to be.

The Bridal room

Hidden away from the main flow of the venue is a serene, private bridal room. It’s a peaceful retreat where couples can prepare, take a breath, or enjoy a quiet moment amidst the celebrations.

The Bar

The dedicated bar area ensures that the rhythm of the day remains smooth and natural. It supports the transition from meal to evening celebrations perfectly, keeping guests refreshed and the atmosphere lively.

In-House Catering at The Great Barn

At The Great Barn, food is a central part of the celebration. The talented in-house chefs create indulgently delicious menus from vibrant canapés to generous, crowd-pleasing main courses. All are crafted with an emphasis on locally sourced and, wherever possible, organic produce. Every dish is brimming with flavour, beautifully presented, and designed to be thoroughly enjoyed.

Menus are carefully curated but wonderfully flexible, and the chefs are always happy to make tweaks if you have something special in mind.

THE GREAT BARN IS A PHOTOGRAPHER’S DREAM

For couples who prioritise photography, The Great Barn is a dream. From natural backdrops and dynamic lighting to striking architectural features, every setting becomes an opportunity for stunning imagery.

Golden hour over the fields creates some of the most cherished portraits, while the interior of the barn lends itself to atmospheric, warm-toned evening shots. Whether crisp and editorial or soft and romantic, every photography style finds its perfect canvas here.

Even the candid moments guests laughing in the courtyard, embraces beneath fairy lights, quiet reflections near the old stone walls become cinematic there.

Why the Great Barn is one of my favourite venues

There are countless reasons The Great Barn is one of my favourite venues, but perhaps the most significant is the feeling it creates from the moment you arrive. It is a venue that doesn’t just host an event; it enriches it. I love how it effortlessly blends history with elegance, creating an atmosphere that feels both grounded and magical. The barn itself holds this gentle sense of grandeur, sophistication and class whilst also not being remotely intimidating. It’s impressive in scale, yet incredibly welcoming. And let’s not forget Emma and John are utterly charming and their team are fantastic as well.

FINAL THOUGHTS

If you’re planning your wedding, you’ve probably already discovered just how many choices you have — the venue, the dress, the music, the cake… and now, even how you say “I do.” One of the most exciting (and empowering) shifts in modern weddings is the rise of the wedding celebrant like me. But what exactly is a celebrant, and why are more and more couples choosing to have a celebrant at a wedding.

Unlike a registrar or member of the clergy, a celebrant is a professionally trained individual who crafts and leads a bespoke wedding ceremony tailored completely to you. They’re not bound by legal scripts or religious texts, which means your ceremony can be exactly what you want — heartfelt, warm, modern, romantic and fun, or all of the above.

So if you’re wondering whether or not to have a celebrant for your wedding, here are five brilliant reasons why couples are shifting towards saying yes to celebrant-led weddings.

1. a celebrant FOR your wedding means your ceremony, your way

Let’s be honest — a lot of wedding ceremonies feel… well, a bit impersonal and possibly all the same. You sit through the same script you’ve heard at a dozen other weddings, maybe with a few minor edits. But your love story isn’t generic, so why should your ceremony be?

Having a celebrant for your wedding gives you complete creative freedom. Whether you’re dreaming of something classic and romantic, quirky and fun, or deeply spiritual in a non-religious way, a celebrant can bring your vision to life. A celebrant at a wedding really does mean your ceremony, your way.

More importantly, they take the time to get to know you. Celebrants take the time to meet with you beforehand, ask about your story, your values, your in-jokes, and your vibe, and then craft a ceremony that feels genuinely “you.” It’s the difference between reading lines and telling your story.

2. No rules, no restrictions, total freedom

One of the main reasons to choose to have a celebrant for your wedding is the flexibility they give you. With a registrar or religious officiant, you’re often limited by:

Venue restrictions (must be licensed for legal marriages)

Time slots, in other words, fitting in with the registrar’s very busy schedules

Script limitations not being to include personal vows, religious or spiritual content, etc.)

Availability on your chosen day and not knowing who the person who will be officiating

When you book a celebrant for your wedding, you can hold your ceremony anywhere — on a beach, in your backyard, in a forest clearing, or even at your favourite pub. You can have it at any time, from sunrise to midnight. And you can say whatever feels right, with no template or rules holding you back.

This freedom opens the door to an experience that feels less like a legal formality, and more like a celebration of your connection.

3. having a celebrant at your wedding CEREMONY will Make it memorable for you and your guests

Let’s be real — a lot of guests go into a civil ceremony with a feeling of ‘here we go again’ – less so, I think, for a church wedding. I think the surroundings and atmosphere of a church wedding really help – secretly, they could be thinking, though I hope the Vicar’s sermon isn’t too long. But ask someone who’s been to a celebrant-led wedding, and they’ll probably light up.

Why? Because these ceremonies, I’m told by happy clients, are often the most memorable part of the entire day. Not just for the clients but for the guests as well. That’s how it should be. A skilled celebrant knows how to balance emotion with humour, romance with storytelling. They draw your guests in, make them laugh, maybe tear up a little, and leave them talking about your ceremony long after the last dance.

Plus, because it’s so personal, you’ll remember it too. You won’t be zoning out while someone reads a generic script. You’ll be fully present, hearing your story told back to you in a way that feels deeply meaningful.

And the best part? You get a beautiful keepsake script afterward — something you can read again on anniversaries, or even share with future generations.

4. when you book A celebrant for your wedding CEREMONY it will bring, calm, confidence and heart

Weddings can be emotional. Nerves are high, the schedule is tight, and suddenly you’re standing in front of all your loved ones about to make the biggest commitment of your life.

Having a celebrant for your wedding, someone you have chosen, who knows you, knows your story, and knows how to hold the space, can make all the difference. They’re not just reciting words; they’re guiding you through one of the most intimate and public moments of your life.

Celebrants are trained professionals, but they also bring warmth, adaptability, and a genuine passion for people. If anything goes off-script, and sometimes let’s be honest, it can, they’ll handle it with grace and good humour. Only weeks ago, one of my grooms at the very last minute realised that he’d left the rings behind in his lodgings an hour away.

Many couples say their celebrant felt like a friend by the time the wedding came around — someone they trusted to set the tone, make them feel grounded, and ensure the ceremony was everything they’d hoped for.

5. your ceremony is the next chapter in your story – make it count

Here’s the thing: the ceremony is not just the bit you get through before the party starts. It’s the heart and reason for the day the moment you become partners in life, in front of the people who matter most.

Too often, the ceremony gets overlooked in favour of dresses, décor, and dinner. But when done well, it’s the moment that sets the tone for the whole celebration — the one your guests remember, the one that makes you feel something profound.

Choosing a celebrant is a way of saying: This matters to us. You’re not just saying the legal words. You’re making real promises, sharing real feelings, and creating a moment that’s 100% yours.

but wait ……. what about the legal side of your wedding CEREMONY?

You might be wondering: I thought a celebrant-led ceremony isn’t legal, what about that side of things?

Great question! Here in the UK celebrants aren’t allowed to conduct the legal marriage — but that doesn’t mean your wedding isn’t real. A wedding and a marriage are quite different. Do you celebrate a wedding anniversary or marriage anniversary. The former of course. Think of it like buying a house. When is the exciting bit. Signing the contract or getting the keys.

If you choose to have a celebrant for your wedding simply complete the legal paperwork separately — usually at a local registry office, either before or after the big day. It’s a short, low-cost appointment that covers the legal side, freeing you up to create a truly personal ceremony without restrictions.

Think of it like registering a birth — it’s a formality. The real celebration is when you gather your people and tell your story, your way.

Final thoughts: having a celebrant for your wedding means you will have a ceremony that’s worth remembering

A wedding celebrant isn’t just someone who stands at the front and talks. They’re your creative collaborator, emotional guide, and storytelling expert. They help you shape the moment you become married into something meaningful, memorable, and totally “you.”

So if you’ve been dreaming of a wedding that feels more personal, more flexible, and way more you, booking a celebrant might just be the best decision you make.

Your wedding ceremony isn’t just the start of the day — it’s the start of your married life. Let it be unforgettable.

Thinking of booking a celebrant for your wedding CEREMONY?

If this sounds like the kind of wedding experience you’re after, do please get in touch and let’s start the ball rolling with a meeting to see if we are a good fit. Remember you’re not just hiring someone to talk. You’re inviting someone to be part of one of the most important moments of your life.

Wedding Venue

Are you thinking about having your wedding at home? If you are lucky enough to have a home or garden big enough to cater for this special event, then why not? I speak from experience. When my husband and I got married, we had our service in the local church and held our wedding reception at home. Now, if I could turn back time and the options had been available to us, I might well have chosen to have our ceremony at home too, although some of our ‘old school’ relatives would have been outraged by the idea!

Let’s face it: there’s something magical about having a wedding at home. Most of us have a powerful connection to our homes. There is nowhere more peaceful and reassuring to be.

Whether you hold it in the garden where you played as a child or the family farm, like my couple, Louisa and Dan, with amazing barns and the rolling landscape, more couples are choosing to get married in spaces that really mean something special to them. Even celebs like Stacey Solomon and Josh Swash are joining in this rising trend; they held their wedding at their delightful home, Pickle Cottage.

So, what is the appeal? I find that a wedding at home offers real intimacy, flexibility, and, of course, a personal touch that no traditional venue can even come close to. And, naturally, with the help of a wedding celebrant, you can have a heartfelt, unique wedding ceremony that reflects your beautiful love story, even if your home isn’t a licensed venue.

That’s right, your home does not need to be licensed for a celebrant-led wedding ceremony.

So, if you’re dreaming of a relaxed, joyful wedding day, a personal celebration of your relationship, then here’s how you plan a wedding at home, so it runs smoothly and fulfils your vision. I’ve included what you’ll need to organise, and some insights I have picked up from the many garden weddings I have been lucky enough to officiate.

Why Choose A Wedding At Home?

As Dorothy, from The Wizard of Oz stated, ‘There’s no place like home.’

The Americans and Australians have been doing it for years. Now, finally, more and more UK couples are embracing the idea of having a wedding at home. Why? Because:

It’s deeply personal: Your surroundings already tell part of your love story, and you’ll feel like your surroundings are wrapping their virtual arms around you both.

You have full creative control: There are no “venue rules”; it’s just your vision for a very special event.

It can be more cost-effective: Sometimes! You can make your wedding at home more economical than a hired venue by utilising the help and talents of your family and friends. From homemade decorations to a wedding cake created by a clever relative, there are many ways you can prevent wedding costs from spiralling. I love the sense of community a wedding at home creates; it certainly makes a wedding day feel even more special.

It feels more relaxed: You’re at home, where love resides, memories are created, friends and family belong, and laughter never ends.

Just take a look at Grace and Elijah’s wedding. It was held at Elijah’s mother’s home. I officiated their wedding in the courtyard, surrounded by farm buildings with a fountain in the middle. With the sun shining brightly, it felt very Italianate. The reception took place under a large stretch tent in the garden. Despite the massive amount of hard work leading up to their special day, everyone was very calm and relaxed. That’s why a wedding at home is so perfect.

Photo Credit – Jo Cunningham Photography

So, from romantic garden ceremonies to festival-style celebrations on family land, I’ve been lucky to attend them all. Having a wedding at home offers endless possibilities. You are only restricted by your imagination!

How Does the Legal Side Work?

Let me explain briefly the legalities of having a wedding at home.

In the UK, you can’t legally marry at home unless your property is a licensed venue. But don’t worry, that doesn’t mean you can’t have your dream ceremony at home.

Many couples register their marriage at the Registry Office (a simple legal appointment with two witnesses), in the same way someone registers a birth or death. Then they hold their main wedding ceremony (where you say your vows and exchange your rings) and have a celebration at home, led by a wedding celebrant, like me.

For some couples, getting their family on board with the idea that this is the perfect option for them can be difficult. I remember Charlotte and Oscar’s wedding. Charlotte’s dad, being very ‘old school’, took a bit of persuading! Originally, he wanted them to have a traditional church wedding; however, on the day of the wedding, he absolutely loved it! He adored just how personal the wedding ceremony was, and how much it reflected their relationship together. And, it was what they really wanted.

I’ve written a very informative blog that explains the legalities in more detail; you can read it here.

This is What a Celebrant Offers:

A fully personalised, non-legal ceremony that focuses on being completely authentic and personalised to you.

Freedom to include religious, cultural, or symbolic elements

Vows, readings, and rituals crafted around your love story

Flexibility to marry wherever and however you choose

Whether the ceremony takes place under a tree, by a lake, or in your back garden by the flower beds, a celebrant ensures your wedding at home is meaningful and a truly memorable part of your day. Read on for more details….

What You Need to Organise for A Wedding At Home

Planning a wedding at home is exciting, but because you’re essentially creating your own venue, it can be a lot of hard work too. Here are some practical elements you need to consider:

Shelter

Photo Credit – Chris Jelf Photography

Marquee, tipi, or stretch tent hire is vital, especially for our unpredictable UK weather. Remember Charlotte and Oscar? Unfortunately, the weather was not kind on their special day. The ceremony took place in a marquee, rather than the garden, however, the marquee looked beautiful! Adorned with flowers, it felt very intimate. The good news is that there are some fantastic companies across the UK with a magnificent range of marquees in all different shapes and sizes. Here are the links to a few companies I’ve been lucky enough to work with: Stretch Tents South West, DP Marquees, Bohemia Canvas

Choose one that suits your guest list and style. I love the traditional pitch pole marquee – giving the true country wedding/fete vibes, or at the other end of the scale, the magnificent wooden structures taking their inspiration from Victorian glasshouses. Of course, tipis give a rustic, boho vibe that’s perfect for an informal, forest-style wedding.

Don’t forget you need flooring, sides, and heaters (again, we are back to the great British weather!).

Furniture

You’ll need to hire tables, chairs, and possibly lounge seating if you wish to set up a relaxed area. Alternatively, just like Louisa and Dan’s wedding, you can utilise bales of hay! (see image above)

Remember to plan for both the ceremony seating, dining space, and catering. You may also wish to include extras like a cake table or a bar setup.

Don’t be afraid to chat to your friends and family. Collectively, you may be able to cater for the day with an eclectic mixture of seating from them all, after all, a wedding at home is very much about your community coming together.

Power & Lighting

It might be worth considering hiring a generator for the additional lighting, catering equipment, music, and more.

Use a mixture of lighting, but don’t forget fairy lights; they create a stunning, magical atmosphere.

Toilets

It’s an essential, I’m afraid, but try to hire luxury portable toilets (much nicer for comfort and cleanliness!).

Catering

Here you are spoilt for choice. Decide between traditional caterers, food trucks, BBQs, or a homemade buffet. It all depends on your budget and theme. Naturally, if you opt for a homemade buffet, you can call upon the skills of ‘Aunty Flo’, ‘cousin Jen’, your best friends, and your neighbours to create a scrumptious offering, fit for any royal garden party!

If caterers are coming to your home, remember they’ll need space for prep and service (undercover, of course).

Drinks

Provide your own alcohol (no corkage fees!). Why not hire a mobile bar? There are some fantastic ones available for special events. Alternatively, you may wish to create your very own DIY drinks station!

You can hire glasses and don’t forget ice.

The Ceremony

One of the most exciting and fantastic benefits of a wedding at home is how personal your ceremony can be, especially when led by a professional, independent wedding celebrant. Wait until you talk to me on the phone, you will feel my excitement the moment we speak. I love just how special celebrant-led weddings are. Well, you just have to look at the photos on my website to see the joy at every one!

Photo Credit – Ross Talling Photography

You see, with a celebrant, you’re not confined to a scripted, one-size-fits-all legal ceremony. You won’t stand in front of a stranger as you exchange your vows. Instead, you’ll work with your celebrant, who gets to know you as a couple and helps you shape a ceremony that reflects your journey, values, and personality.

This could include:

Your love story: From how you met to the moment you said ‘yes’!

Personal vows: Write your own promises in your own words — romantic, heartfelt, funny, or all three. (Your celebrant can help you with this if you have writer’s block or you are unsure where to start.)

Family & friends’ involvement: You can invite loved ones to do readings, poems, or blessings.

Symbolic rituals: These may include handfasting, candle lighting, or tree planting.

Cultural and spiritual elements: Combine cultural traditions that matter to you, add or adapt any religious elements you would like, or create new ones!

Remember, you can hold the ceremony anywhere on your property: under a favourite tree, beside a pond, in the vegetable garden, on the lawn with an arch, or even indoors by candlelight with floral decorations. There’s no pressure, no rules, just the freedom to create a moment that truly feels special to you.

And because it’s non-legally binding, there’s no rush or bureaucracy (unlike a registrar, a celebrant doesn’t have to dash off to the next ceremony!). You can take your time; you can really savour the moment and make this the emotional centrepiece of your wedding celebration.

Tip: Work closely with your chosen celebrant so that together you can co-create a ceremony that brings joy and meaning to everyone there. It’s not a legal formality, like one led by a registrar, but a lasting memory of your special day.

Practical Bits – Very Important Though!

Parking: Where will your guests park? Will you need signage or maybe a shuttle bus to ferry guests to your home?

Neighbour notification: Let them know in advance and be considerate of noise, of course, if they are friends of the family and attending the wedding, you might get them involved, helping with catering, parking, or essentials like seating!

Insurance: Public liability and wedding insurance are highly recommended.

Waste disposal: Arrange for bins and rubbish removal for after the event.

Wet weather backup: Even with a marquee, walkways can get slippery and consider umbrellas to help your guests stay dry (I know, I’m obsessed with the weather!)

Hot weather plan: shade is key especially for a ceremony when your guests are seated and unable to move to shade

Personal Touches That Make A Wedding At Home Special

What makes a wedding at home so memorable is the freedom to fill it with personal details. I love the feeling of community with a wedding at home. There is a sense that everyone has pulled together to make the day happen (often the case!).

Here are some simple ideas I have experienced, during my 8 years as a wedding celebrant in Devon, that can add a personal touch to proceedings:

DIY decorations like handmade bunting, signage, or floral centrepieces

A memory table with family photos and keepsakes

Your dog as part of the ceremony, so adorable!

Garden games and a chill-out zone for guests

Fire pits and marshmallows for a cosy evening touch, throw in some blankets, and your guests will be very happy

Umbrellas – for that unhelpful and unexpected shower

Bottles of water for the heatwave

I’m sure you have a head full of fun, innovative ideas you can add into the mix, but isn’t it exciting to think you have the freedom to do all of this?

Final Thoughts on Planning A Wedding At Home

As I hope you can tell, I’m a massive cheerleader for garden weddings. A wedding at home is filled with charm, warmth, and authenticity. You’re not just renting a space for a few hours; you’re building your celebration in a place that already holds love for you. You are adding to the history of your home with your special day.

Yes, it does take more organisation, but the reward is a wedding day that truly reflects your story, your style, and your heart. With a trusted wedding celebrant and the right support at your side, your home can be transformed into the most unforgettable wedding venue of all.

Introduction

Devon, home to two National Parks, 5 Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and countless charming villages and towns, is the perfect wedding location. There is a plethora of wedding ceremony venues in Devon to choose from, and a few hidden secret locations too! As a wedding celebrant, I’ve had the pleasure of officiating ceremonies in some of the most picturesque settings, so I thought I’d share my insights with you.

Deer Park

Just outside the market town of Honiton, in East Devon, is the Grade II listed building Deer Park Country House. Set in 80 acres of stunning grounds, Deer Park is a Georgian mansion offering sumptuous style and sophistication. I have been lucky enough to officiate at countless weddings here, and every single one has been unique in its own right.

Deer Park offers a variety of breathtakingly beautiful locations for couples to choose from for their ceremony. From the romantic orangery to the picturesque Italian Gardens, I have presided as a wedding celebrant for indoor and outdoor weddings. As the venue offers exclusive use to their couples, I find that both the wedding party and their guests relax from the moment they arrive. Paired with luxury accommodation, award-winning food, and exceptional service, it is little wonder why Deer Park is so popular.

When looking for wedding ceremony venues in Devon, this one always delivers intimate warmth, a pretty setting, and a magical atmosphere.

Huntsham Court

What better place to get married than a country house literally built for a bride? Indeed, Huntsham Court, once a derelict Tudor manor, was rebuilt by 1868 following the marriage of the owner Charles Arthur William Troyte to Catherine Mary Walrond in 1864. The reason? Her family did not deem the old Tudor manor suitable accommodation.

Today, this stunning manor house offers couples exclusive use of the venue and its magnificent setting. As wedding ceremony venues in Devon go, this one provides great flexibility. The estate is lucky enough to have a church at the end of its driveway, so they can offer couples religious ceremonies, licenced registrar wedding ceremonies, and independent celebrant wedding ceremonies.

Huntsham Court’s website outlines the benefits of each, but naturally, as an independent wedding celebrant, I love their description for independent ceremonies: ‘You can throw any rule book away, as it is entirely hand-crafted. This way, it reflects your personal beliefs and values.’

Huntsham Court caters for up to 130 guests, with accommodation for up to 100. However, it is their very special 2 day country house package that sets them apart. I’ve been lucky enough to experience the relaxed, friendly atmosphere this offer provides; it adds an extra special ambience to the personalised weddings I officiate.

Rockbeare Manor

Like many wedding ceremony venues in Devon, including Deer Park and Huntsham Court, Rockbeare Manor offers exclusive use of their gorgeous country house and grounds. Many couples worry about location when choosing wedding ceremony venues in Devon, however, this grand estate can be found just outside Exeter.

If the British weather is kind, then consider having your wedding ceremony in the established gardens overlooking the Manor house and Dartmoor. For indoor ceremonies, Rockbeare Manor has two stunning options: the Dining Room and the Ballroom. I promise you, the wedding ceremony photographs will be picturesque, whichever option you select. In the many wedding ceremonies I have presided over, Rockbeare Manor and its professional staff, with a great eye for detail, have always delivered.

Pynes House

Again, offering exclusive use, Pynes House is an elegant, romantic setting for weddings. If you are looking for wedding ceremony venues in Devon steeped in history, then this prestigious Georgian mansion is a must. You will be walking in the footsteps of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert nonetheless. Additionally, I can testify that you will be treated like royalty on your special day.

I have been a wedding celebrant in both the glorious gardens (yes, the sun does shine in Britain when we are lucky) and the impressive state rooms. There is a delightful choice for couples to consider, all equally spectacular.

The Great Barn

A step away from grand houses now and one of my favourite wedding ceremony venues in Devon, for its exclusive 2 day hire rule, is The Great Barn. To ensure everything is perfect for your special day, The Great Barn gives you exclusive access to the venue the day before your ceremony as part of your booking. This gives you time to decorate the space to your tastes and rehearse music and lighting for your special day.

I also love The Great Barn’s ability to cope with the unpredictability of the British weather. They have a beautiful arbour in the walled gardens outside for warm, sunny spring/summer weddings and, naturally, the magnificent Great Barn for indoor weddings. This impressive structure, with its oak vaulted ceiling, always creates a very special atmosphere. If the weather isn’t playing ball, the venue also offers a smaller barn, The West Barn, for reception drinks.

Finally, if you do want a religious wedding ceremony, they have the most picturesque church within walking distance.

Hayne Devon

Set in the rolling hills of Devon, with woodlands and orchards, is Hayne. I often get a magical, woodland fairy vibe at this remarkable location. Like The Great Barn, your booking gives you exclusive access for 2 days. There are two enchanting outdoor locations where wedding ceremonies can be held, and if the weather isn’t kind, couples can always rely on the Threshing Barn. If you are looking for wedding ceremony venues in Devon that offer a more relaxed, quintessential, but pretty vibe, then I would seriously consider this one.

Brickhouse Vineyard

You might be looking for wedding ceremony venues in Devon that are a bit different. Do you fancy having a Mediterranean vibe to your wedding day? Brickhouse Vineyard certainly delivers that. I love the versatility that this delightful venue offers couples, too. From ‘elopement’ style weddings for up to 10 guests to a full weekend wedding for 70 daytime guests, Brickhouse Vineyard can cater to your needs.

I truly love the thatched round house at this venue and the fact that even if the weather doesn’t play ball, you can still feel like you are linked to the outdoors with their floor-to-ceiling windows. Of course, as a wedding celebrant, I love outdoor weddings, and here, my couples have exchanged their personal vows overlooking vineyards and the glorious Devon countryside – perfect.

Powderham Castle

If you truly wish to feel like royalty, for just one day, then why not consider, probably one of the grandest wedding ceremony venues in Devon, Powderham Castle? Originally built in 1391, Powderham Castle has evolved considerably over the last 6 centuries into the magnificent structure we see today.

Powderham Castle has 4 licensed venues, from the State Rooms to beautiful outdoor settings for official marriage ceremonies to take place. Of course, don’t forget, if you choose to have an independent wedding celebrant officiate over your wedding ceremony, this does not have to take place at a licensed venue. Not sure what I mean? Please check out my blog, ‘What Are Wedding Celebrants‘? Finally, before I forget, if you are looking for wedding ceremony venues in Devon that allow your ‘best friend’ to attend, Powderham Castle is dog-friendly, so your pooch can be part of the celebrations too!

Mount Folly Farm

Mount Folly Farm at Bigbury is one of those wedding ceremony venues in Devon that offers the very best views! I have been lucky enough to enjoy those views on many occasions! However, Hatch, and Stretch Tents South West are companies who often provides marquees at this stunning location, can offer their services to a whole host of venues, including some I have already discussed in this blog and Little Dartmouth located on the coastal hills of the county, where the marquee provides views to Torcross and Star Point Lighthouse.

The beauty of a marquee wedding is that it can align perfectly with my own wedding service. You see, with a wedding celebrant like myself, you literally can get married anywhere! So, if you want to have a wedding in your own back garden or at a location significant to you both, then hire a marquee and book a wedding celebrant to officiate the ceremony.

That’s where my hint at hidden locations comes in, which I alluded to at the beginning of this blog. When searching for wedding ceremony venues in Devon, remember you are only limited by your imagination! Devon is filled with magical spaces that just ache to be used as a backdrop for your special day (landowner’s permission is needed, of course).

As you have discovered, there are so many wedding ceremony venues in Devon to explore; we are spoilt for choice! I would like to give a brief mention, therefore, to just a few more all are exceptional and offering something different : Beaconside House Clifford Barton, The Hall Exeter, East Soar Farm, Hareston Manor, and Higher Eggbeer. These are wedding venues that I have only attended once or twice or I have yet to visit (although I do have bookings in a few of these this year, which is very exciting).

I can’t wait to officiate at more weddings in these equally special locations. You never know, maybe, if you are reading this and planning your own special day, I might be lucky enough to be your wedding celebrant at one of them.

Do registrars offer personal ceremonies?

When planning a wedding, couples often dream of a ceremony that is uniquely tailored to their story, filled with personal touches and meaningful moments. The term “personalised ceremony” has become a significant selling point for many couples looking for a memorable way to say “I do.” In recent years, some registrars—the legal officiants employed by local councils—have begun marketing their services as “personalised” to attract couples.

But do registrars offer personal ceremonies? Or is this a strategic attempt to replicate the service that independent celebrants provide? In this true, ultimate guide, we’ll dive into what registrars offer, explore how their services differ from celebrants, and unpack the reality behind the claim of “personalised ceremonies.”

<img decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-9177 size-full" src="https://fanfareceremonies.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/485C4B95-E2E5-47B6-9929-78989CB844CD_1_105_c.jpeg" alt="Do registrars offer personal ceremonies like this one?
Do registrars offer personal ceremonies? What Do THEY Actually Do?

Registrars are legally authorised officials who conduct civil ceremonies and oversee the formal registration of marriages and civil partnerships. Their primary role is to ensure that the legal requirements of the marriage are met.

While registrars provide an essential service—ensuring marriages meet the legal requirements—they are primarily focused on the administrative and statutory aspects of a wedding. So, do registrars offer personal ceremonies? Their ceremonies, by necessity, are designed to satisfy legal obligations and therefore lack the flexibility and creativity needed to craft a truly bespoke experience. A typical registrar-led wedding includes:

1. Standardised Structure:

Registrar ceremonies follow a set legal framework. This ensures that the couple’s marriage is legally recognised but often limits flexibility in how the ceremony is conducted.

2. Pre-approved content:

While registrars may offer a selection of content, indeed vows for couples to choose from, these are typically pre-written templates with little room for creativity or deviation.

3. Time and Venue Constraints:

Registrar ceremonies are often scheduled back-to-back at registry offices or council-approved venues, which means they are bound by time constraints and must adhere to logistical guidelines.

4. Legal Focus:

The registrar’s primary responsibility is to ensure the legality of the marriage. Their focus is less on creating an emotional or meaningful experience and more on fulfilling statutory requirements.

What Does ‘Personalised’ Mean in Registrar Ceremonies?

Do registrars offer personal ceremonies? Recently, registrars have started to market their ceremonies as “personalised.” On closer inspection, this personalisation often amounts to minor adaptations within their predefined framework. For example:

Couples may be allowed to choose from a selection of scripts or add a few personal readings or music choices.

Some registrars may include a brief mention of the couple’s story, but only within the constraints of their official guidelines.

Flexibility in venue and timing may be offered, but only to the extent permitted by council policies.

Therefore, while asking the question, ‘Do registrars offer personalised ceremonies?’ please be mindful that while these options provide a degree of customisation, they fall short of the truly bespoke experience that celebrants offer.

Celebrants: The True Purveyors of Personalised Ceremonies

In contrast, celebrants specialise in creating ceremonies that are completely unique to each couple. Celebrants are not bound by legal frameworks, which allows them to focus entirely on crafting a meaningful and memorable experience.

Independent celebrants are skilled storytellers who excel at weaving a couple’s narrative into a meaningful and memorable ceremony. Their training often includes:

Understanding how to connect emotionally with an audience.

Developing scripts and speeches that are tailored to individual couples.

Mastering the art of pacing and delivery to enhance the emotional resonance of a ceremony.

Click here to discover in more detail about celebrants, but here is a quick synopsis on how the celebrant service differs to that of a registrar:

1. Tailored Ceremonies:

A celebrant will spend time getting to know the couple, learning about their story, values, and vision for their wedding. They then craft a bespoke ceremony that reflects the couple’s personalities, beliefs, and relationship.

2. No Pre-Written Scripts:

Unlike registrars, celebrants don’t rely on templates. Every ceremony is written from scratch, ensuring that no two weddings are alike.

3. Unlimited Creativity:

Celebrants can incorporate any elements the couple desires, from unique rituals (like handfasting) to incorporating cultural or religious traditions. There are no constraints on location, timing, or structure.

4. Emotional Connection:

Because celebrants invest time in building a relationship with the couple, their ceremonies are deeply personal and emotionally resonant. They create an atmosphere of intimacy and significance that is hard to replicate in a registrar-led ceremony.

Why Are Registrars Adopting the Language of Celebrants?

The rise in celebrant-led ceremonies has challenged the traditional role of registrars in weddings. Couples are increasingly drawn to the idea of a fully personalised ceremony, and celebrants have become known for their ability to deliver this experience. Councils have reacted to this demand and are keen to retain and capitalise on the lucrative source of income they receive from weddings. Consequently, do registrars offer personal ceremonies? The facts remain that the core registrar service continues to be largely unchanged and is focused on legal obligations rather than true personalisation.

In response to this new demand, some registrar offices have started to market their services as “personalised” to compete with celebrants. This adaptation could be seen as a strategic attempt to lure couples away from celebrants without fundamentally changing the registrar service.

So, Do Registrars Offer Personal ceremonies?

While registrars may offer minor customisations, they remain limited by their legal responsibilities and institutional frameworks. The use of celebrant-style language in their marketing can create confusion, leading couples to believe they are getting a bespoke experience when, in reality, they are not.

Why This Matters for Couples

Choosing the right officiant is one of the most important decisions a couple can make when planning their wedding. It sets the tone for the day and shapes how the ceremony will be remembered.

If couples are seeking a legally binding ceremony with some minor personal touches, registrars may be the right choice. However, for those who want a ceremony that reflects their unique love story and creates lasting memories, a celebrant offers an experience that registrars simply cannot replicate.

Understanding the distinction between these services ensures that couples can make informed decisions that align with their vision for their wedding day.

Do registrars offer personal ceremonies? A Call for Transparency

I hope I have answered your question, ‘Do registrars offer personal ceremonies?’ Whilst registrars provide an essential service, it’s important to acknowledge the limitations of their offering. Marketing their ceremonies as “personalised” can mislead couples into expecting a bespoke experience when, in reality, the service remains largely standardised.

Couples deserve honesty and transparency about what each officiant offers. By understanding the key differences between registrars and celebrants, couples can choose the service that best suits their needs and create a wedding ceremony that truly reflects their love and commitment.

CONCLUSION: DO REGISTRARS OFFER PERSONAL CEREMONIES?

If your wedding day deserves a ceremony as unique as your love story, don’t settle for limitations. Do registrars offer personal ceremonies? The answer is, not really. While registrars provide an essential legal service, only an independent celebrant can craft a bespoke ceremony tailored to your journey, values, and dreams.

Non religious wedding ceremonies once considered unconventional, have gained popularity, reflecting a broader cultural evolution towards personalised expressions of love and unity.

Whilst the legalities of course remain important, non religious wedding ceremonies have transcended mere legalities and have become deeply meaningful occasions that reflect the values and identities of the couples involved. Celebrants are at the forefront of this evolution.

A shift in tradition, beliefs and values

The UK has witnessed a gradual decline in religious affiliation and church attendance over the years. As society becomes more diverse and secular, there’s a growing demand for ceremonies that resonate with couples irrespective of their religious beliefs or affiliations. Non religious wedding ceremonies offer a neutral ground where people from different backgrounds can come together to celebrate.

The changing face of ceremonies

Ceremonies have always held a special place in human societies, serving as pivotal occasions for celebrating love, welcoming new life and honouring the departed. There is now a growing demand for ceremonies that are inclusive, personalised and reflective of individual beliefs. This demand has paved the way for the ascent of non religious wedding ceremonies, with celebrants playing a central role in their design and execution.

The role of celebrants in non religious wedding ceremonies

Celebrants are trained professionals who specialise in crafting and officiating ceremonies tailored to the unique preferences and beliefs of their clients. Unlike traditional clergy members or registrars who prioritise legal formalities, celebrants offer a holistic approach, emphasizing emotional connection, personalisation and storytelling making then well suited for today’s diverse and secular society.

Additionally, Celebrants work closely with their clients going well beyond just officiating. They curate meaningful and authentic experiences that resonate deeply with all involved. By embracing diversity, creativity and inclusivity celebrants empower couples to reclaim ownership of their wedding making it an occasion that is more memorable than merely facilitating the legal requirement of marriage registration.

Personalisation beyond legalities

Unlike registrar led ceremonies that often follow a standard format, celebrant led wedding ceremonies offer couples the freedom to personalise every aspect of their ceremony.

From choosing readings and music to crafting personalised vows. Couples have the creative license to tailor their ceremony to reflect their unique love story, values and beliefs. The focus is on authenticity and individuality.

Non Religious Wedding ceremonies Focus on love and commitment

While legal recognition remains important, non religious wedding ceremonies prioritise the celebration of love and commitment above all else. These ceremonies emphasise the emotional and spiritual aspects of marriage highlighting the bonds between the two individuals and their shared journey going forward. By focusing on love, rather religious doctrine, non religious wedding ceremonies are inclusive and accessible to couples of all faiths and backgrounds.

Whether couples identify as atheists, agnostics or simply prefer a secular ceremony, non religious wedding ceremonies offer a welcoming and respectful space for all couples to celebrate their love.

Meaningful rituals and symbolism

While non religious wedding ceremonies may not incorporate religious rituals, they often include meaningful symbolic gestures that hold significance for a couple. From unity candle ceremonies to hand fasting, couples can choose rituals that reflect their cultural heritage, shared interests or personal preferences. These rituals add depth and symbolism to the ceremony.

Emotional connection and authenticity

Non religious wedding ceremonies led by celebrants are renowned for their emotional depth and authenticity. Unlike registrar led ceremonies which may feel impersonal, transactional and sometimes even rushed, celebrants take the time to get to know the couple and understand their love story.

This personal connection allows them to craft a ceremony that captures the essence of of the couple’s relationship, creating an intimate and heartfelt experience that resonates with everyone present.

Community and support

Non religious wedding ceremonies celebrate love within the context of community and support. Friends and family play an integral role in these ceremonies, offering love, encouragement an blessings to the couples as they embark upon this new chapter of their lives. The presence of loved ones creates a sense of belonging and reinforces the couple’s commitment to each other within a broader social context.

In the realm of weddings, there’s a prevailing misconception that a registrar led ceremony or a religious service are the only options available. However the reality is diverse and inclusive. Non religious wedding ceremonies, led by celebrants are emerging as the popular and meaningful alternative. As guardians of love stories, celebrants enrich the fabric of ceremonies, making them not just legal unions but profound expressions of love, unity and belonging.

You’d think you’d be able to celebrate your wedding how the hell you’d like, wouldn’t you? Sadly though, despite it being unfair and unreasonable, if you include the legal marriage within the wedding ceremony, at this moment in time, it is not possible. This is because of the current, archaic marriage laws we have in the UK. So, how do you combine a legal marriage and have a wedding that’s authentically you and not compromised with ridiculous restrictions, on content amongst other things?

Modern, forward-thinking couples are identifying that the legal marriage process is a necessary formality, but not a necessity that has to be included within their wedding. They understand that by removing it and treating it as a separate entity completely, they can take control of their ceremony. Consequently, they can choose where and when it is held, the content of it, and who officiates.

The legal marriage is no more than a contract

The legal marriage is the contract between you both. I would suggest that it is not the crux of getting married; albeit serious, it merely changes your status in the eyes of the law. It is the official, some might say dull, but essential part of your commitment to one another.

In England and Wales because of the overbearing rules and restrictions in place to legalise civil weddings, real authenticity within the ceremony is precluded.

The ceremonies therefore tend to be formulaic, generic and predictable with little or no personalised content. As a result, couples who want authenticity are turning to industry professionals who provide a service specialising in just that. They create, write and deliver bespoke wedding ceremonies, with no restrictions at all. Literally tailormade. That professional is an independent Wedding Celebrant.

Respected Wedding Planner Georgie from Georgina Rose Events and countless others choose Wedding Celebrants over the alternative, the registration service, for their weddings, purely for that reason. It gives you freedom to have your ceremony your way.

Georgie wanted her ceremony to be “super personal”. If you are in any doubt follow these two links to her highly successfully and brilliant TikTok account where you can hear from the horse’s mouth how delighted she was and why she chose this lesser known option. She describes very succinctly her entire legal marriage and celebrant led wedding ceremony.

Including the legal marriage within your ceremony compromises real authenticity

The problem is caused by the mere fact that the legal, official paperwork is included with the wedding ceremony. This compromises the authenticity and freedom that some couples want. Simply by taking it out you can include anything you want and make the ceremony your own. Plus the process, is very straightforward. 40 declaratory and contractual words, a signature on the dotted line or possibly even an Ipad and the knot is tied in the eyes of the law. So, what do you need to do?

Two ceremonies

The concept of having two events to celebrate your marriage has been around for some time, specifically in cultures where multiple wedding celebrations are rooted in tradition. It has had something of a revival recently thanks to millennials wanting more personalisation, choice and control over their weddings.

The onset of Covid19 also meant that couples were forced to have a much smaller wedding than they had originally planned. To get round this they legalised their marriage, and then celebrated with a wedding, when permitted.

Couples who have decided upon a destination wedding also get the legal marriage done beforehand, and then head off to their chosen hot, or possibly cold, spot for their wedding.

How to make the most of the legal marriage

Most couples keep this small for practical and financial reasons. By law you only need two witnesses to attend the registry office with you. And who you choose is, of course, entirely up to you. The price for this simple legal ceremony (aka 2+2 ceremony in some councils) can be as little as £46.00 (current cost in Devon), but it varies from area to area. It’s still a lovely opportunity for a special outfit, lunch, dinner or whatever if you want to mark the occasion.

Others like to make it more of an event and choose to have a larger group of close friends and families. This will obviously be more expensive but if you can afford to, or want to, why on earth not? Look at Jamie Laing and Sophie Haboo from Nearly Weds fame – what an amazing and flamboyant time they had!

At the ceremony for a legal marriage there is no need to exchange rings if you don’t want to. The ring ceremony is completely symbolic and nothing to do with the legalities, so it’s not a necessity, at this point, at all. On the other hand, if you prefer to include that element, you can do so.

So how do you celebrate your legal marriage authentically? – with a wedding of course!

As part of your wedding planning, you will have chosen a Wedding Celebrant. As Wedding Celebrants are unable to legally marry couples in England and Wales, you will undertaken the legal marriage separately, as outlined above.

This leaves you free to throw your heart and soul into your actual wedding day. All the familiar trappings, another dress perhaps and, dare I say it, the best, restriction free, memorable ceremony that you could wish for. A ceremony that celebrates you both, your love for one another, and all those who have been on the journey along the way. Your ceremony, your way.

Choosing your Wedding Celebrant is one of the most important decisions you will make. Read some tips on my blog. You are choosing them to be part of one of the most important and intimate milestone moments in your lives. You must genuinely like them, feel comfortable with them, and have a connection with them. Their vision for your ceremony must align with yours. You must trust them. You must like their energy and their voice.

In order to create the authentic personalised ceremony you want, they will bombard you with questions. “Why are you getting married”. “Why did you propose?”. “Why did you say yes?”. “Who are your bridesmaids and why have they been given this special role?’. ‘Why are these ushers so important to you?”, and so on. You see why you need to feel comfortable with them?!

They’ll want to hear anecdotes, of scenarios that make you laugh, of adventures, of how you live your lives, your good and bad characteristics. The good times, and of course the bad. All this information will be weaved into your ceremony script.

The result is an authentic celebratory ceremony that feels very real. Your guests will be totally connected with it and it will set the day up for one of the best parties ever.

The importance of a celebratory authentic ceremony

Your wedding day is a milestone event. In my opinion it should have your ‘branding’, your stamp all over it. From the dress you choose, to the décor, and most importantly, but I would say that wouldn’t I, the ceremony. I can’t believe how often it is overlooked, but please, please, don’t forget it. Remember, you should not have to compromise on it by complying with rules and regulations set out for a legal marriage.

The rest of the day spills out from your ceremony. You will look back and think, wow, we had a fabulous party! The flowers were lovely, the food was delicious, the table scape divine, but the story that was told, the energy that was created, the words you chose to say to one another, is the heartfelt meaningful and enduring part. It is the foundation of your marriage. The reception, the party, is really the reward for your public commitment to one another.

Never under estimate how important your wedding ceremony will be to you in years to come. Consider the confines of a legal marriage ceremony. Enlist the services of an industry professional, trained to ensure you have a ceremony that is incomparable, memorable, and rightfully yours. Hire an independent Wedding Celebrant like me. I promise you won’t regret it.

All You Need To Know!

I have been working as a Wedding Celebrant now for 7 years and it saddens and frustrates me that I am still writing blogs with a title like this one “What are Wedding Celebrants?”. But I must. It is essential that I keep plugging away because the simple fact is that the majority of engaged couples have either never heard of a Wedding Celebrant or the pivotal role they play in a wedding.

This unawareness leads to missed opportunities for couples who are looking for a meaningful and inclusive wedding ceremony experience.

<img decoding="async" width="1500" height="2000" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-8818" src="https://fanfareceremonies.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/IMG_7227.jpg" alt="what are wedding celebrants?
So what are wedding celebrants?

Wedding Celebrants are lovely, warm, empathetic and creative individuals who are professionally trained and specialise in creating and conducting wedding ceremonies that are tailored to a couple’s preferences and beliefs.

Unlike their counterparts, i.e. religious figures or Registrars, their role goes way beyond simply officiating ceremonies. They offer a more flexible and personalised approach collaborating with couples to create a ceremony that truly reflects their very personal story, values and beliefs.

Wedding Celebrants have essential attributes; the ability to connect with people, a conduit for emotions, storytelling and a capacity to uplift, leaving a positive imprint on the hearts and minds of those who attend their ceremonies. They collaborate closely with couples and through their words, presence, and demeanour, will create an atmosphere that foster’s reflection, joy and unity. The ceremony will leave a lasting impact on all those in attendance.

Why do wedding celebrants still have limited recognition?

Newly engaged couples are often unaware that Wedding Celebrants exist, let alone know about the service they provide. What are Wedding Celebrants able to do? They have the ability to transform a traditional ceremony into a unique and personalised experience.

A Wedding Celebrants’ invaluable contribution is overlooked mainly due to the dominance of traditional wedding practices.

Religious or civil ceremonies are more commonly known and understood. The prevalence of these traditional practices overshadows the alternative option of hiring a wedding celebrant. Consequently, Celebrants remain on the periphery of the wedding industry, Couples may not actively seek out information about Celebrants assuming that religious or civil officiants are their only choice, despite the potential of creating and enjoying a far more unique experience.

Families also often have significant influence in wedding planning including the ceremony itself. Many couples feel obligated to follow a more traditional path, be that religious or civil. Breaking away from these expectations and exploring alternative options can be challenging, especially when couples fear disappointing their loved ones.

The frustration is that broadly speaking, wedding industry suppliers, be that venues, photographers, caterers, cake makers, florists or videographers, recognise and acknowledge the difference that a Celebrant can make to a couple’s ceremony and value the work they do. This lack of knowledge about Wedding Celebrants is not within the wedding industry itself. If consulted, most wedding suppliers would actively encourage couples to consider a Celebrant led ceremony.

WhAT ARE WEDDING CELEBRANTS?: THE BENEFITS

Wedding celebrants play a crucial role in modern society by offering a personalised, inclusive, and meaningful approach to wedding ceremonies. They provide couples with the freedom to create a wedding that reflects their unique love story, beliefs, and values.

What are Wedding Celebrants’ ceremonies like?

Whatever you wish it to be! Whether you want a non-religious ceremony, a fusion of different cultural traditions, or a ceremony that incorporates specific rituals, Wedding Celebrants can help bring your vision to life. They have the expertise to guide you through the process, offering suggestions and ideas while ensuring that your ceremony remains true to who you are as a couple.

Wedding Celebrants have the ability to create a relaxed and intimate atmosphere during the ceremony. They are skilled in public speaking and can deliver the ceremony in a way that engages and captivates the audience. Whether you want a light-hearted and humorous ceremony, or a more solemn and romantic one, Wedding Celebrants will adapt their style to match your desired tone.

Personal Connections

Another benefit of working with Wedding Celebrants is the personal connection they bring to the ceremony. Unlike a Registrar or religious figure who may not know you personally, Wedding Celebrants take the time to get to know you as a couple. They will meet with you multiple times, asking questions about your relationship, your journey together, and your dreams for the future. This allows them to craft a ceremony that is not only meaningful but also deeply personal.

Flexibility

Furthermore, Wedding Celebrants are more flexible in terms of location and timing. Unlike religious or civil ceremonies that are typically held in specific venues or during specific hours, Wedding Celebrants can officiate ceremonies in a variety of settings, such as beaches, gardens, or even private homes. This allows couples to choose a location that holds special meaning to them, making the ceremony even more significant.

Conclusion: What Are Wedding celebrants?
