The desire for personal wedding ceremonies in the UK has grown rapidly recently. As more couples seek ceremonies that offer a unique sense of occasion, are meaningful and reflective of who they truly are, celebrant-led weddings have become an increasingly attractive option.
Celebrants craft personal wedding ceremonies, there are no scripts for them to follow. Consequently, choosing the right wedding celebrant for you is essential. Experience is important. Their style is essential. The rapport you feel when you are with them, is a must. Your chosen wedding celebrant needs to reflect you as a couple so your unique day is memorable for all the right reasons.

The value of experienced wedding celebrants
Currently, in England and Wales, wedding celebrants focus entirely on creating and delivering personal wedding ceremonies that become the emotional heart of your wedding day. They are responsible for holding the story, guiding the moment, and setting the tone for everything that follows.
A wedding celebrant needs to know how to hold the room, how to craft the perfect wedding script unique to each couple, and how to adapt in the moment. This comes with experience. Experienced wedding celebrants have developed this combination of knowledge, skill, and connection. This makes a noticeable difference in how natural, relaxed, and meaningful personal wedding ceremonies feel. They know how to adjust, whether that be slowing the pace, offering reassurance, or gently guiding a couple through tricky moments.
Standing in front of a live audience, navigating nerves, emotions, family dynamics, and unexpected moments requires skill and it is essential you remember it for all the right reasons.

What's the difference between 'traditional' wedding ceremonies and personal wedding ceremonies?
When couples discuss 'traditional' wedding ceremonies, they are often referring to church wedding ceremony scripts. Likewise, as the popularity has grown for getting married outside of religious settings, many also attribute this term to registrar-led wedding ceremonies. I would argue that celebrant-led wedding ceremonies can be just as traditional, but more personal and unique to you as a couple.
Both church and registrar wedding ceremonies must abide by certain rules because they form a legally binding agreement between a couple. Consequently, the structure, tone, and wording for these wedding ceremonies can feel very generic and familiar. Celebrant-led wedding ceremonies are quite different.
Celebrants can offer personal wedding ceremonies because they are not a legal declaration of your marriage. Celebrants, at this moment in time, cannot legally marry you. I know, that might sound confusing, but let me explain.
Couples who choose to have a celebrant-led wedding usually get the legal side of their marriage completed quietly, in a registry office with two witnesses prior to their wedding day. The legal side of the marriage is completed much like registering a birth or death. The wedding day is then a celebration of that legally binding agreement, led by a celebrant, who can then completely personalise the ceremony, making it entirely about the love you share for one another and with family and friends.

What can be included in personal wedding ceremonies?
Absolutely anything. There are no restrictions. Personal wedding ceremonies are scripted entirely around you as a couple. Every couple's story should unfold differently.
If you wish to include poetry, hymns, readings, songs, you can. It's your special day, and having a completely personalised wedding is the icing on the cake!
My wedding ceremonies, for example, keep the form of a traditional wedding ceremony. They are not overly long, equally they are not too short. Like everything else about my ceremonies I follow your lead. The length of your ceremony is dependent upon what you choose to include.
The scripts I write are not based on a template where I just insert your names where appropriate. Each wedding ceremony is crafted uniquely because no two couples are the same. In fact, it's one of my favourite parts of my job, getting to know my couples so I can write wedding ceremonies that feel natural for them and are engaging for their guests. They are balanced, delivering a beautiful, balanced mixture of emotions. There'll be room for a little laughter. Time for some reflection. And sometimes even moments that bring tears to the eyes. And, when the ceremony is over, you get to keep a copy of your personal script to treasure for a lifetime.
How do personal wedding ceremonies still create a sense of occasion?
As I highlighted earlier, my wedding ceremonies still feel very 'traditional'.
Ceremony flow is one of the most underestimated aspects of a wedding and one of the most noticeable when it’s missing. Experienced wedding celebrants, like myself, know when to pause, when to create space for reflection and when to guide the moment forward so it feels effortless, rather than staged. Experienced wedding celebrants allow meaningful moments to land without them feeling forced.
Personal wedding ceremonies do not need to feel gimmicky, or 'out there', although if that is the style of wedding you would like, then there are wedding celebrants who specialise in this style of ceremony. I prefer my personal wedding ceremonies to feel calm, professional, and emotionally intelligent. As a result, the wedding ceremonies I create for my couples ensure that the ceremony is an integral part of your wedding day.

Do personal wedding ceremonies have to be at licenced venues?
The simple answer is no. Because a celebrant-led wedding is not the legal side to your marriage, you can have your wedding ceremony absolutely anywhere (with the landowners permission, of course!).
I particularly love weddings held at the family home and gardens. There is something so special about watching family and friends come together in a familiar setting to celebrate the love of two beautiful people. It is like the home is wrapping it's arms around them with a celebratory hug.
Marquees can be particularly magical too, festooned with fairy lights and delightful floral displays. Naturally, having a marquee in your chosen location ensues if the British weather lets us down, the wedding will still be amazing.
One point I will highlight here is to choose your setting carefully. Personal wedding ceremonies can quickly lose their sense of occasion if they take place in just a vast open setting. If you think about church weddings, or weddings at licenced venues, they have a physical form or structure encasing them. Whether that is the church, a suite in a manor house, or walled gardens at a country estate, the physical surroundings offer a sense of occasion, encasing the ceremony and making it more intimate. Think, for example, about marquees, gardens, forest clearings, barns, walled courtyards and stately homes with large rooms.

Can we add personal wedding vows to the ceremony?
Yes, of course. That's the beauty of a celebrant-led wedding ceremony, your wedding vows can be completely unique to you.
Personal wedding ceremonies allow the couple to write their own vows because they do not have to be legally binding, that side of the marriage has already been taken care of at the registry office. And don't panic. I can offer help and advice to any of my couples that need it.
Your vows can be funny, heartfelt, and true to you both. They don't have to be long, and you don't have to memorise them either!
